Hatchery Caretaker Image

Halflings are well known throughout Cretia as the caretakers of dragonkind. Rumored to have been created by a piece of Mengrana’s heart, they have a natural knack of caring for young hatchlings. As a halfling, you work in the hatchery where dragon eggs of all variety are bred and nurtured, such as drakes, wyverns and even dragons. Depending on your job, you assist or run the hatchery. This is where young dragonkind learn the basics of life in your den. Your job has always been to nurture, teach, protect and provide for these young lives.

Dragonkind often have a naturally friendly disposition to hatchery halflings; willing to give them shelter, advice, company or possibly even help. Even in the case of chromatic dragonkind, halflings may be greeted by acknowledgment and possible friendliness. If you have been working in the hatchery for a very long time, there may be adult wyverns or young adult dragons who still treat you with the same reverence as they did when they were children under your care.

By spending so much time around dragonkind, creatures that are intrinsically magical, some of that power has seeped into you. Perhaps the spell has been passed down from generations of hatchery halflings or perhaps one dragonkind in particular blessed you with a slight magical ability. You learn one first level spell.

Suggested Characteristics

Hatcheries are often located away from settlements for safety reasons. As a result, halflings are often a bit removed from the other races but deeply connected to dragonkind. By devoting your life to raising and caring for another race, that caring nature tends to shape your personality. Your flaws may lie in misunderstanding of other cultures or perhaps a warped view and idolization of dragons.

Variant Hatchery Caretaker: Chromatic

Not all dragons are good and neither are halflings. Some hatcheries across Cretia are dark places which breed and train chromatic dragonkind. The halflings that work in these facilities often have evil alignments and have grown a fierce temperament to raise these dangerous dragonkind, sometimes for nefarious purposes. For example; selling war trained wyverns to supply the highest bidder, or in direct service to a chromatic dragon.

Variant Feature: Dragon Dealer

Dragon dealing is a lucrative business; you have black market connections all across Cretia to people in the trade. Should you call out to a chromatic dragonkind and tell them of your background, they may be more willing to work with you to their own ends and are less likely to become aggressive towards you. However, should a metallic dragonkind place you to one of these evil hatcheries they will be hostile and possibly even attack you on the spot. If you have been working in the hatchery for a very long time, there may be adult wyverns or young adult dragons that remember you and will treat you according to how you raised them.
