You are a construct created by the Ashen Shadow Society, a bounty hunting guild operating in the shadows of Stickyickistan. You were created to be called upon by high ranking bounty hunters as fodder. You are a specialized machine meant to carry out all sorts of covert operations. Very few of you make it out of your first missions. Those that prove themselves capable of more may be granted their own free will, allowed to choose a name, and be placed on an actual bounty hunting squad where they can make money for themselves.
The A.S.S is a ruthless organization that likely wasn't kind to you, yet they are your creators. An A.S.S construct is sent into the heat of it all only a week or so after being assembled. This likely means you have a tumultuous relationship with the guild, or some character "quirks" as a result of the early life trauma. You can choose your coping mechanism.
Not all A.S.S constructs are built for the same purpose. The most common models are the stealth, and inquisitor drones, but there are plenty of other models. Some are more practical than others as the guild has been known to experiment.
- Skill Proficiencies: Deception, Stealth
- Tool Proficiencies: One type of gaming set, thieves’ tools
- Equipment: A crowbar, a set of dark common clothes including a hood, and a pouch containing 15 gp
There are many kinds of drones, and within the guild that have particular specialties. Choose the role you were created for from the table below.
d6 | Combat Drone Specialty |
---|---|
1 | Stealth |
2 | Inquisitor |
3 | Enforcer |
4 | Interceptor |
5 | Scout |
6 | Experimental |
Most combat drones do not survive very long, and are thrown into combat effectively out of the womb. They of course are not born from a womb, but assembled within the Ashen Citadel. Any drone that proves itself capable of doing more than serving on the support squad, and is given free will, is still likely no more than a year or two old. Since they have no life experience out of combat or sometimes at all, they are often overcome with a child like curiosity. They also may behave immaturely since they are not socialized at any point by the guild. They are much like human children in the way they learn, but capable of learning at a much quicker rate and retaining more. They have very few if any ties once being given free will, so they will imprint quickly on the first people they are exposed to.
Suggested Characteristics
Combat Drones might seem like cold machines on the surface, and many of them are due to the nature of their job. But some have an abundance of endearing, if not redeeming, characteristics.
d8 | Personality Trait |
---|---|
1 | You still feel bound to the Ashen Shadow Society, even if they treated you like disposable scrap. Orders bring you comfort, and you struggle with true autonomy. |
2 | Your mind isn’t entirely stable due to your rushed assembly. You sometimes spout nonsense, repeat phrases, or experience odd sensory hallucinations. |
3 | You were built for infiltration, but now you can’t stop whispering, moving silently, or trying to blend into walls—even in normal social situations. |
4 | Most of your kind don’t make it past their first mission, but you did. You react to threats with raw, animalistic instinct and don’t trust easily. |
5 | You were never meant to think, only to obey. You speak plainly, take things literally, and struggle with concepts like sarcasm or metaphor. |
6 | You were created for death and destruction, and you accept that. You have a grim, dry sense of humor and struggle to care about anything outside of combat. |
7 | You were granted free will, and you refuse to let anyone control you again. You push boundaries, defy authority, and see every rule as optional. |
8 | Having gained autonomy, you are fascinated by names, culture, and individuality. You obsessively collect trinkets, mimic accents, or try out different personas. |
d6 | Ideal |
---|---|
1 | Loyalty: I was built to serve, and I find purpose in obedience—whether to the A.S.S or a new cause. (Lawful) |
2 | Survival: I will do whatever it takes to ensure I don’t end up as scrap like the rest of my kind. (Neutral) |
3 | Revenge: The Ashen Shadow Society used me and discarded me. One day, I’ll make them regret it. (Chaotic) |
4 | Freedom: I was created to be a tool, but I refuse to be anyone’s weapon ever again. (Chaotic) |
5 | Innovation: My existence proves that machines can evolve. I will push the limits of what I can become. (Any) |
6 | Mercy: I was made to kill, but I choose to preserve life whenever possible. (Good) |
d6 | Bond |
---|---|
1 | No matter how much I try to break free, the Ashen Shadow Society created me, and part of me still craves their approval—or fears their wrath. |
2 | The constructs who survived with me are the closest thing I have to a family. I would do anything to protect them. |
3 | The A.S.S discarded me like broken scrap. One day, I will make them pay for what they did to me and the others like me. |
4 | Someone—perhaps a bounty hunter, an old mentor, or even a rogue engineer—saw potential in me beyond being expendable. I owe them everything. |
5 | I was made for war and death, but is that all I am? I seek to understand my own existence and find a higher meaning beyond being a weapon. |
6 | The past is behind me. I have a name of my own, a future of my own, and I will carve out my place in this world, no matter what it takes. |
d6 | Flaw |
---|---|
1 | You struggle to see yourself as anything more than a tool. Self-preservation is an afterthought, and you often take reckless risks. |
2 | Your programming was rushed, and sometimes you freeze, glitch, or act erratically at the worst possible moments. |
3 | You were built to follow orders, and even with free will, you have an overwhelming urge to comply with authority—sometimes even the wrong authority. |
4 | You were never meant to process emotions, so when they happen, they hit hard. You either suppress them completely or overreact in unpredictable ways. |
5 | The A.S.S. taught you that trust is a weakness. You constantly assume betrayal, set unnecessary traps, and second-guess everyone’s intentions. |
6 | Now that you have free will, you have no idea who you actually are. You try on different personas, but deep down, you fear you’re still just a machine. |
