You grew up in a monastery or an orphanage for a formative part of your life. In your time there your only friend was the cleric that worked as the local healer. He/she taught you piety and the non-magical ways of healing.  He also taught you how to make healing potions and poultices and how to make scrolls of healing for times when there were large scale battles or epidemics.
