Marxist Image

Revolution has been your life for as long as you care to remember. You trained as a youth, studied the use of weapons and armor, learned basic survival techniques, including how to stay alive in the alienated marketplace. You might have been part of a standing national army or a mercenary company, or perhaps a member of a local workers guild who rose to prominence during a recent uprising or even an academic who decided that the exploitation of the workers of the multiverse must be stanched. You believe that change is inevitable but progress only happens when people do as their conscience instructs them, but never in conditions of their own choosing. Marxist's despise merchants, nobles, clerics, and objectivists. They believe mankind must be united against the class system that alienates them from their labor; that leisure is the highest pursuit and is the right of all members of society; that religion is the opium of the oppressed, so is opium; that value is a product of the labor that produces the goods; and finally that justice demands from each according to their ability and to each according to their needs.

When you choose this background, work with your DM to determine which revolutionary organization you were a part of, how far through its ranks you progressed, and what kind of experiences you had during your revolutionary career. Was it a standing army, an exiled vanguard, a millers guild, a mining coalition or a village militia? Or it might have been a noble’s or merchant’s private army, or a student of the law.

*Marxists cannot be clerics or paladins and serve no deity.

Specialty

During your time as a marxist revolutionary, you had a specific role to play in your unit or vangaurd. Roll a d8 or choose from the options in the table below to determine your role:

d8 Specialty
1 Officer
2 Scout
3 Infantry
4 Cavalry
5 Healer
6 Quartermaster
7 Standard bearer
8 Support staff (cook, blacksmith, or the like)

Feature: Activism

You have a military rank from your career as a revolutionary. Comrades loyal to your former revolutionary organization and peasants, commoners, nobles, and scholars who are sympathetic to the cause of egalitarianism, still recognize your authority and influence, and they defer to you if they are of a lower rank. You can invoke your rank to exert influence over other comrades and requisition simple equipment or horses for temporary use. You can also usually gain access to friendly revolutionary encampments and fortresses where your rank is recognized.

Suggested Characteristics

The horrors of exploitation and armed revolution combined with the rigid discipline of academic inquiry leave their mark on all marxists, shaping their ideals, creating strong bonds, and often leaving them scarred and vulnerable to fear, shame, and hatred.

d8 Personality Trait
1 I am prone to incendiary language.
2 I’m haunted by memories of revolution. I can’t get the images of violence out of my mind.
3 I’ve lost too many friends, and I’m protective of those I still have.
4 I’m the sort that wont stand for bullies.
5 I can stare down a hell hound without flinching.
6 I always try to deal with conflicts and oppression peacefully, but if that doesn't work after two attempts I attack with no further warning. Advantage on initiative rolls after 2 persuasion attempts.
7 I have a crude sense of humor.
8 I face problems head-on. A simple, direct solution is the best path to success.
d6 Ideal
1 True Human Flourishing. Our lot is to lay down our lives in defense of others. Everyone deserves their share of stored leisure. +4 to AC when defending comrades.
2 Responsibility. I do what I must even if that means getting my hands dirty.
3 Critical. When people follow orders blindly, they embrace a kind of tyranny. I have advantage on rolls when intimidating/persuading a person of the higher classes.
4 Egalitarian. Sharing is intrinsic to our nature. Douple GP value when shared exactly evenly among the party.
5 Material Dialectic. Material circumstances give rise to all ideas. Ideals are worth killing over or going to war for, but only in defense of the exploited. And only after I have tried to persuade/Intimidate the exploiter away from their action.
6 Globalist. My city, nation, or people are equal in importance to all others. Revolution is for all workers everywhere.
d6 Bond
1 I would still lay down my life for the workers and comrades of the world.
2 Someone saved my life on the battlefield. To this day, I will never leave a friend behind.
3 My honor is my life.
4 I’ll never forget the crushing alienation my class suffered or the capitalists who dealt it.
5 Those who fight beside me are those worth dying for.
6 I fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.
d6 Flaw
1 Incintives. I have a hard time dealing with the complaints of the talented. Disadvantage on rolls against creatures and NPC's with a higher skill level than myself.
2 Penchant for Bull Shit. I have little respect for anyone who is not convinced by reason. Hatred for those who succeed against 2 or more persuasion attempts.
3 Kept. I owe my livelihood to the system of exploitation that I criticize, this shames me and makes me prone to intimidation.
4 My hatred of the ruling class is blind and unreasoning.
5 Level Down. I am willing to redistribute loot even if that means no one has enough to buy necessary gear afterwards.
6 Inevitablity. There are times that I do not get involved in issues of importance that I should because I believe revolution is inevitable. Once/day the DM can force me to roll a d20 DC11, If i fail I avoid the conflict.
