You move swiftly, deftly, and quietly for your task is a dangerous one. You spend your time alone in hostile territory scouting for threats. You usually work at the head of an army, caravan, or adventuring party risking personal harm or capture for the sake of your companions. Your senses are keen, and your focus is unwavering. You've learned how to move quietly and track your prey. You've become comfortable in isolation, but often yearn for the rare moments when you can drop your guard and relax.

Feature: Trailblazer
Your experience scouting ahead of parties has taught you a few tricks. You've learned to discretely mark your path in ways that only you and anybody you've taught to can notice. Subtle scuff marks or a stone wall, a pointed rock facing ninety degrees offset from your actual path, or leaves split just so are some examples of your trade-craft. When you are traveling alone, you may use these trail markers to always accurately guide your way back to your party if they haven't moved. Also, your party members may attempt to follow your trail by making a perception check instead of a survival check, and if you have taught them your marking methods, they may make that check at advantage. The DM will determine the difficulty of spotting the markers based on the environment.
Suggested Characteristics
Generally stoic and confident in nature, most scouts are friendly and helpful to the people they know. They can seem to have a hard edge and be on guard when among strangers, but are adept diplomats and tend to choose pragmatic solutions over conflict. Scouts are not generally not assassins, as they know the value of favorable odds, but some scouts do revel in the silent kill of enemy scouts or lone threats.

Posted Jan 30, 2020This looks fantastic. Only thing missing is the proficiencies and quick build gear. I'm planning to ask my DM if I can use this background and I'm gonna ask him about my own ideas for what proficiencies and gear would apply, I figured I'd share them with you too for your consideration, and the consideration of anyone else viewing the background.
The gold amount is low because tools are expensive and because most scouts are probably the wilderness type where money isn't the highest priority. I almost didn't put any but even Hermits and Outlanders get some and the scouts would have to return to civilisation eventually.
Something like "a scroll case full of maps and notes about an area you previously scouted", or a walking staff, or a length of rope, or even a warm blanket might also fit thematically but again, you know your theme better than I do and it wouldn't be my decision anyway. I wouldn't add all of them personally, but maybe one of them; two max.)

Posted Feb 1, 2020Thank you for the feedback, and the additions. At the time I was doing a lot of home brew on here, but it was mostly to get my ideas down so it’s possible they’re missing some elements, as you saw here. I appreciate you making those suggestions, and I would add them if I could.
