The False Idol Image

You never asked to be a hero. A few desperate choices in the heat of chaos somehow turned into tales of valor. Now, the world sees you as a living legend--savior, slayer, symbol of hope. The truth is far less grand, but no one cares to hear it.

You avoid the spotlight, haunted by a reputation that grows without your consent. Yet wherever you go, the stories follow--and so do the expectations. You didn’t choose this path. But fate, it seems, has chosen you.

A scorched leather glove said to have “caught a fireball” midair. You were just trying to pat it out.
A rusted dagger people believe you pulled from a dragon’s eye. It was actually stuck in a roast pig.
A small wooden carving of your face—clearly made by someone who’s never met you.
A banner embroidered with your name and the title “Bugbear Breaker,” though you’ve never seen one.
A broken pair of spectacles someone swears you wore during your "battle with the Mind Flayer."
A feather from a "phoenix" you supposedly saved—really just a dyed goose feather.
A child’s drawing of you fighting a monster with seven heads and twenty arms. You keep it folded in your pouch.
A chunk of stone said to be from the ruins of a fortress you “single-handedly brought down.”
A crude medal labeled “World’s Greatest Hero,” gifted by a small farming village.
A dented horn someone insists was used to call you forth in their hour of need. You’ve never heard it before.
A tiny book of ballads about you—half of which contradict each other.
A clay cup with your name etched at the bottom, discovered in a faraway tavern.
A scroll with a prophecy mentioning someone like you… or someone with a similar haircut.
A badly made wooden sword a young fan tried to gift you before their town paraded you around.
A crumbling wanted poster with your face and the phrase “Too Dangerous to Live” scrawled beneath.
A holy symbol blessed in your name by a cult you didn’t even know existed.
A worn patch bearing your silhouette, part of a local militia’s uniform now.
A stone coin from a made-up kingdom you’re supposedly the hero of.
A lock of hair supposedly from your head, now kept in a sealed vial and revered by fans.
A letter from someone claiming you saved their life… during an event you definitely weren’t present for.

Variant The False Idol: Unwanted Fame

Whether you like it or not, your name is known. Common folk recognize you wherever you go, eager to tell tales of your so-called greatness or beg for help. You can find shelter, food, and aid from people who admire your legend--though their expectations may be high. Disguising yourself can help you avoid this feat, but the longer you stay in one place, the more your story catches up with you.
