Mothers Of Smoke And Bone Image

You crossed the river, but the ancestors tied your shadow to the shore.

"U we l’oto, vben vben gbe ukhin gha r’orie."

Now you walk with their voices in your shadow. You carry names the world has forgotten, and secrets the wind still remembers. People feel your presence like a story passed down in whispers. Some call you priestess. Some call you deathwalker. Some call you Maman Igbe—the one who walks between.

You are not trusted. You are not refused.
You are the silence after mourning. The flame after ash.
And wherever you go, the past walks with you.

“The child who buries the mother must learn to speak with silence.” — Esan Proverb

Harrowing Event

Prior to becoming an adventurer, your path in life was defined by one dark moment, one fateful decision, or one tragedy. Now you feel a darkness threatening to consume you, and you fear there may be no hope of escape. Choose a harrowing event that haunts you, or roll one on the Harrowing Events table.

d10 Harrowing Event
1 A child’s laugh, echoing from behind your tongue. It is not your own.
2 A single word carved into bone appears in your dreams: “Return.”
3 A dying man whispers a name to you—his own. You never asked for it.
4 A spirit in your jar refuses to stop weeping during a full moon.
5 You find ashes beneath your tongue when you wake. They taste like old prayers.
6 A raven circles overhead and caws a name you haven't spoken in years.
7 Your shadow moves independently for one heartbeat, and bows.
8 A villager drops to their knees when they see your eyes. “You wear her,” they say.
9 You smell your grandmother’s cooking. She died before you were born.
10 The jar feels heavier. Someone new has entered it—someone you did not kill.

Feature: Mamá Igbé - "Spirit Matron”

Wherever you go, the air shifts. Dogs fall silent. Mirrors blur. The common folk—especially women—feel seen by you. They call you Mamá Igbé, Manbo of the ForgottenDeathwife, The Flame Who Remembers.

You may request shelter, information, or small offerings. Most will comply, out of fear, reverence, or quiet love. You are not trusted, but you are never refused.

When you use magic or disguise to appear as someone else, creatures must succeed on a Wisdom (Insight) check against your Deception to see through it. Even then, many believe they’re speaking with a spirit in borrowed flesh.
