You were raised in a castle or military fortress. Perhaps your parents were minor royalty (the second cousin to someone's brother). Perhaps your parents had money either as a master merchant or by other means and a position was purchased to place in the the service of a knight. Or, mayhaps one of your parents saved the life of a royal member and you were made a squire as payment. You've been raised to understand honor and the life of a knight. You understand what it means to live by a code. You have served one of noble birth, learning the way of the knight in hopes that one day you would be granted a title. (Whom did you serve? What was that person's station in life? Is their family old and established, or was it a title only recently bestowed? How much influence did they wield, and over what area? What kind of reputation does their family have among the other aristocrats of the region? How do the common people regard them?))
- Skill Proficiencies: History, Persuasion, and a choice of either Animal Handling or Insight
- Tool Proficiencies: One type of gaming set, and two weapons of your choice.
- Languages: One of your choice
- Equipment: A set of fine clothes, a cheaper set of armor of your choice, a scroll of pedigree, a warhorse with saddle and saddlebags, and a purse containing 25 gp
Feature: Honor
You have served and have been taught the value of honor and living by a code. People will recognize this in you when you speak, and you are able to persuade the common people to listen to your words. You, in turn, will recognize another who has been taught to believe in the same values. Because of your honor and adherence to an oath taught to you from the moment you came into service of your knight, you are able to speak to those above your station as though you were their peer. At the end of your service to the knight, you were granted a minor title, a pedigree that is worth little more than the parchment it was written on, but it is a symbol of your oath. It is signed and set with a royal seal by the knight you faithfully served.
Suggested Characteristics
A squire would typically become a knight after completing their training and proving their competence and bravery. This usually occurred around the relative age of 21, although it could happen sooner, particularly if the squire demonstrated exceptional skills in battle. The knighthood was formally bestowed upon them through a dubbing ceremony. Though the position holds no royal position, it marks one as a warrior who has sworn an oath to someone or to a cause.
