🌕 Moth-Touched

“It came to me on a night without moon or fire. The light wasn’t from this world — and neither was I, after.”

You once followed a strange flickering presence — a light no one else saw. It led you to a place of still air and unreadable symbols, where dust moved in rhythms and silence hummed like wings. Whether it was a forgotten spell, a sliver of divinity, or something older, it marked you. It left your soul trailing smoke, your dreams filled with luminous ruins, and your instincts sharpened toward secrets.

People sense something different in you. Like a lantern seen through fog.

Ability Scores:

+1 Wisdom, +1 Dexterity

The strange insight and otherworldly subtlety of the Moth-Touched enhance both awareness and grace. These individuals move like smoke and think like candlelight—soft, quiet, and sharp when needed.

Feat:

Mark of the Moth

Prerequisite: Moth-Touched background

You have been marked by a flickering light from beyond — it illuminates secrets, not shadows. You gain the following benefits:

  • Increase your Wisdom or Charisma by 1, to a maximum of 20.

  • You learn the Guidance cantrip and Detect Magic spell. You can cast Detect Magic once per long rest without expending a spell slot.

  • Whenever you make an Insight, Arcana, or Perception check, you may roll a d4 and add the number to the check. You can use this ability a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per long rest.

“The light doesn’t help you hide. It helps you notice what was waiting behind the veil.”

Skill Proficiencies:

📘 Skill Proficiencies

  • Insight – You read emotions as if they were movements in the air.

  • Stealth – You are practiced in moving quietly through both light and shadow.

Tool Proficiencies:

🧰 Tool Proficiencies

  • Herbalism Kit – Your familiarity with scented smoke, ashes, and strange balms borders on ritual.

  • Thieves’ Tools – You’ve learned to move like a flicker of flame, slipping through locks like smoke under a door.

Languages:

🗣️ Languages

  • Celestial (or Primordial, at DM’s discretion) – You don’t know why you understand it. You just do.

Equipment:

🧳 Moth-Touched Starting Equipment

  • A whispering matchbox

A small tin or bone box containing 1d6 strange, short-lived matches. When one is struck, it casts dim light in a 10-foot radius, flickering with multicolored shadows. Once per day, striking a match grants advantage on one Insight or Stealth check within the next minute. The flame goes out if anyone else tries to use it.

  • A soft-wrapped charm made of wax and thread

Glows faintly when held in total darkness. You don’t remember when you made it — or why. When gripped, it gives a sense of direction toward any source of flickering or shifting light, like torches, campfires, glowing runes, or illusions.

  • A pocket journal filled with half-symbols and soot-blotted sketches

Nonsensical to others. To you, this is a reference book of future truths. You can use it as a spellcasting focus for illusion or enchantment spells.

  • Traveler’s clothes, wrapped in a patchwork hood or shawl designed to blend into dim spaces

  • A small pouch with 10 gp

Echoes of the Flame

📜 Table 1: Origin of the Light

Name: Origin of the Light
Dice: d6
Entries:

  1. A dying candle sputtered in total silence, and a shape behind the flame smiled at you.

  2. You followed a trail of glowing moths into a crumbled attic. You came out different.

  3. While stealing from a ruined shrine, a hidden rune pulsed — and only you saw it.

  4. A dream told you to look under a specific tile at sunset. The light beneath is still burning.

  5. You were dead for three minutes. When you woke up, you were watching yourself.

  6. You lit a stolen match, and it cast shadows in the wrong direction.

Feature: Drift in the Veil

Once per long rest, you can move through lightly obscured or dimly lit spaces — such as fog, heavy rain, smoke, illusionary terrain, dim light, or magical gloom — as if partially phased. For 1 round:

  • You are invisible to creatures that rely on sight.

  • You leave no tracks, scent, or audible trace.

  • If you take any action other than Dash, Move, or Hide, the effect ends early.

This doesn’t fool magical detection (like true seeing), but even magical sensors may briefly glitch as you pass.

“No one sees the last breath of a candle. That’s when I move.”

Spell List

The magic granted to you isn’t from formal training — it’s a lingering echo of the flickering light that marked you. It whispers truths and reveals patterns others can’t see. The spells you’ve gained reflect your strange intuition and your ability to notice what doesn’t want to be noticed.

This magic feels personal, reactive — like it’s remembering something for you. Sometimes you don’t cast it… you just let it out.

Spell Level Spells
Cantrip guidance, minor illusion
1st detect magic

The spells granted by your background reflect the strange mark left upon you by the flickering light — a presence that taught without speaking. These spells aren’t traditional arcane formulas or divine blessings. They come naturally, like instincts you didn’t know you had.

• Guidance represents the gentle push of unseen wings in moments of uncertainty.
• Minor Illusion evokes your subtle grip on perception — a gift you never fully control.
• Detect Magic reflects your ability to sense patterns, flickers, and traces others overlook.

Whether these spells were given to you or are just symptoms of the light’s influence is unclear. What matters is that they’re always waiting… just beneath the surface.

Contacts

As someone marked by the flickering light, you tend to attract strange company — outcasts, oracles, eccentric scholars, and those who see between the cracks. Your contacts may include occult librarians, vision-addled street prophets, traveling illusionists, or former cultists who now live quietly and fear the dark.

Whether they respect, pity, or fear you, they recognize that something followed you home from the shadows — and that you sometimes bring insight, danger, or both.
