Not all spell casters come from a formal education or had a master wizard teach them, these are the hedge wizards. Some may end up just being individuals who end up learning spell casting alone, others are just practitioners of the arcane wishing to know more it to aid them. With that said, not all hedge wizards actually know magic and can give other hedge wizards a bad name. These hedge wizards may claim to be a spell caster just others may want to buy their snake oils, false spell scrolls and other worthless items. Now which what kind of hedge wizard will you turn out to be?

When it comes to being a wizard, you know how to look and act the part. You can add your proficiency modifier to deception checks when you try to fake something about your magical history. Some examples may include where you learned your craft, who was your mentor, and faking information about potions, scrolls, and other magical items.

Most hedge wizards are just spellcasters without a formal teaching, so they can range anywhere from con artist to a self-taught herbalist. Pick what you think would fit you the best.

Variant Hedge Wizard: Arcane Con Artist

Some of these hedge wizards can be nothing more than someone in a robe pretending to be a magic user. Now these types hedge wizards tend to be con artist selling various goods. These “goods” could be the real deal but a good lot of them will likely sell fake spell scrolls and snake oils.

 
Variant Feature: The Arcane Underground

You have contacts in the underworld and can gain information not known by the general public. These contacts may give leads but usually at a price, or may ask for a favor. Also, you can add your proficiency modifier to your deception checks when trying to sell fake or false magic items to individuals.
