Royal Image

A pampered princess or prince unfamiliar with work or discomfort; a former commoner just recently adopted by royals, a teenage royal who is dissatisfied with monarchical life and secretly longing for something more; an evil sovereign who rules their country with an iron fist; a kindly, honest, hard-working blueblood who cares deeply about the people who live and work in your kingdom and only want the best for said people; such is the life of a royal. You lead a country or are heir to the throne and you have the world at your feet, everything you could ever want is yours. Yet you don't get to choose who you get to marry and very rarely get to marry for love, you have many boring responsibilities to handle, you have so many unfair restrictions that it's laughable, and you've never done anything on your own. How royals feel about their title varies, but eventually, wanderlust even claims the royal and causes them to go off on their own. A royal can be a powerful ally to your party, but beware! A royal's favor, once lost, is lost forever.

Work with your DM to come up with an appropriate way to play as a royal in your campaigns that won't seem unfair to the other players. A royal wields immense power and playing as one may make others jealous.

Type of Royal

Royals come in all shapes and sizes, as do how they come to be. This table will determine how you came to be royal along with what type of Royal you are.

d6 Type of Royal
1 Child of the village chief
2 Heir to the throne of (kingdom/empire name)
3 Adopted into royalty
4 Took over an existing kingdom
5 Chosen to become royalty by the people of a newly-formed nation
6 Married into royalty

Feature: Bow peasant!

Thanks to your royal title, people are obligated to respect your choices, obey your commands, and grant your wishes, no matter who they are. Even when in an enemy kingdom, people will do this out of common courtesy, even if they don't like you, to avoid the wrath of your family. If in your own kingdom, you have the right to be wherever you want to be. If in a neighboring or allied kingdom, people are more likely to believe whatever reason you give them to be wherever you please in their realm. If in an enemy kingdom, your enemies will be annoyed at you for going as you please when in their territory, but will put up with it to avoid starting a war. Whether people in your hometown, neighboring kingdoms, and nations allied with yours do this out of respect or fear depends on your alignment and your personality. If facing an enemy on your own, your people will fight alongside you if you have proven to be a good and just ruler who cares about the welfare of their subjects. However, if you have proven you are a tyrant who only cares about your evil plans, they will rebel against you and fight alongside your enemy.

Suggested Characteristics

Royals are born/adopted and brought into to a very different lifestyle than the common herd, yet are just regular living beings at the end of the day, they come in a variety pack just like everyone else and their personalities reflect who they are as a person and this determines what kind of ruler they are and will be or if they will even become a ruler at all. Being a royal can be very stressful due to having many responsibilities, being in charge of or inheriting an entire kingdom, lacking freedom, pleasing the royal family they are a part of, unfair restrictions on themselves or the people that they have to combat, etc. Pro tip: giving a royal restrictions on their power can be a great method for watering the power of a royal down.

d10 Personality Trait
1 I wasn't born a royal and I frequently feel the need to prove I belong, even when unneccecary.
2 I am a politically active royal and my main goal is to ensure equity, justice and civil rights for all (or to obtain wealth and political power and use it for my selfish, diabolical purposes).
3 I am known for being kind to all and my generous philanthropy (or being mean to everything and selfish misanthropy) and my people respect (or fear) me because of this.
4 I am used to living in the lap of luxury and have never 'roughed it' until recently. I am still getting used to it.
5 Nothing will stop me from listening to my heart, even if I come off as selfish to others.
6 I've been long-since opposed to my family's ways and I plan to make big changes during my reign.
7 I am always willing to lend a hand to those who need it, but because of my status, people are hesitant to ask.
8 I am torn between being myself and being the person my family wants me to be.
9 I'm always looked up to as a leader because that's what's expected of me due to my title, but I feel alienated from my people because secretly, I want to be surrounded by equals and to be genuinely treated as such.
10 I love to learn, so I quite enjoy the extensive education I had as a royal, but I wish the things I learned were accessible to everyone.
d10 Ideal
1 Power. I will conquer everything in my path with my (oppressive) regime, prioritizing myself, my self-serving agenda, and my extremist beliefs above all else. No, I'm not a tyrant, how dare you suggest such a thing!? (Evil)
2 The Greater Good. While I prioritize justice, integrity, and the prosperity of my kingdom and people first and foremost, this doesn't come at the expense of confronting greater threats to all realms. (Good)
3 Indifference. I could not care less about the state of other kingdoms so as long as my loved ones are safe. (Neutral)
4 Loyalty. My loyalty to those I love will never fade unless it is proven one is not worthy of loyalty to begin with. (Any)
5 Obedience. Just because I am a royal does not mean I am above the law. (Lawful)
6 Rebellion. I refuse to follow rules that take away the rights of others, rules that don't make sense, & unfair rules in general. When a rule that does any or all of these is passed, I will stick it to the man in every way possible. (Chaotic)
7 Protection. If my kingdom is under attack, it is my duty to protect it. (Any)
8 Impartiality. You cannot paint everybody with the same paintbrush, and prejudice will only drive us all apart. And a bigot does not make for a very good monarch. (Any)
9 Ambition. I want my kingdom to grow prosperous, for my people to be happy, and to achieve things no kingdom has ever achieved before. (Any)
10 Isolationism. I would rather not get involved in the affairs of other kingdoms unless I have to or if it would aid my kingdom. (Neutral)
d10 Bond
1 I expect rulers to prioritize their subjects' welfare and the state of their realm, to have common sense, only to become enraged when they don't.
2 I am caught in a forbidden romance and my family would shun me forever if they knew of this.
3 Somebody saved my life, but I do not remember who they are. I am determined to find them and repay their kindness.
4 I love my family more than anything and if given the choice between their happiness and mine, I would choose theirs.
5 I have a bitter rival from a kingdom my family is aligned with and our rivalry could endanger our alliance.
6 I am having a difficult time forgetting my first love and I see my first love in the person I am arranged to be married to.
7 I feel more at home among commoners than royals due to the distance between my family members and I, but I'd also do anything to mend my familial bonds.
8 I am courting the courtesan that is not supposed to fall in love at all because of their job, and we both agree that a world without love is madness, so we plan to elope and write our own destinies.
9 My father and I were inseparable in our youth, but one day, he died of an unknown illness. I am determined to find the cure to the illness that killed him so no one else has to feel the pain I felt when I lost not just a father, but a best friend.
10 My family is prejudiced and their bigotry is well-known across the kingdom, but I don't see things the way they do. There's no way that (insert race or races) can be all bad.
d10 Flaw
1 I have been raised in a castle my whole life and don't know that you can't trust everyone.
2 I am quite impulsive and temperamental and I often get into trouble.
3 I often see the world in rose-colored glasses because I am a romantic who is always searching for true love. This often leads me into tight pickles and causes me to make reckless choices in true love’s name.
4 Because I am not biologically related to my royal parents, I will never rule my kingdom. This makes me jealous and vengeful.
5 I work so tirelessly to please my family, that I forget to please myself, which has lead to many problems in the long run.
6 My family has always criticized me and never listens to me. I expect others to treat me the same and subconsciously assume the worst in everyone.
7 Insecurity arises from family and subjects dismissing my voice, prompting me to undervalue it while seeking recognition and enacting previously ignored beneficial policies for my kingdom. The irony is not lost on me.
8 I am extremely prideful and will blow my top if I am challenged. I will accept the challenge, no matter how risky it is.
9 I'm too willing to give second chances to others, and I am easily backstabbed as a result, and this often leads my kingdom to war.
10 I'm unwilling to forget or forgive when I really should, and this has lead to me wrongfully punishing the innocent. Yet even when this is so, I refuse to free said victim due to my own pride.

Variant Royal: Marquess

A Marquess is among the lowest royal titles in most societies, but you will still make a powerful ally to a party because as a marquess, you will know many people of royalty and nobility and can put a good word in for your party and convince a more powerful royal kingdom to do favors for you and your party.

Variant Feature: I sing the praises of...

If your character has a royal background, you may select this background feature instead of Bow peasant!

You are able to rub elbows with the highest of nobles and royals and can convince the royal of your choice to do your party a favor if you put a good word in for them and sing their praises. If you are on good terms or in an alliance with this royal you may either ask for a bigger favor or multiple favors, 3 favors being the max. If you get the favor you need, but misuse it (for instance, asking for servants to help your party with chores, but constantly abusing and endangering them), word will reach the royal who did this favor for you and will no longer be on good terms with you or break off the alliance and become enemies with you and your kingdom.
