Variant Experimental Researcher: Field Biologist

You study the living world in its natural habitats—cataloging, dissecting, and documenting the intricate relationships between creatures, plants, and ecosystems. From steaming jungles to frozen tundras, you’ve learned that life adapts in astonishing ways, and you record every detail with precision. Your training blends scientific rigor with practical fieldwork, making you both an observer and participant in nature’s grand experiment.

Variant Feature: Empirical Naturalist

Your familiarity with living systems lets you make rapid, informed observations about unfamiliar organisms.
When you spend at least 1 minute observing or examining a living creature, remains, or plant, you can ask the DM one of the following questions, which they must answer truthfully, though briefly:

  • What environmental conditions does it thrive in?

  • What seems to be its primary defense or weakness?

  • What role does it play in the surrounding ecosystem (predator, symbiotic, invasive, etc.)?

Additionally, when making an Intelligence (Nature) or Wisdom (Medicine) check to identify, handle, or stabilize a living creature, you may add your proficiency bonus twice instead of once. You can use this benefit a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, regaining all uses after a long rest.
