“Mercy is a luxury of the weak. I do not grant it—I harvest what is owed.”
— Varyn Draeg, the Pale Wolf of Ozythralis

Introduction

You are Fell—one whose heart has hardened beneath the weight of cruelty, violence, and purpose. Whether forged in the crucible of war, sharpened by betrayal, or born from the dark urge to dominate, your name is whispered where pain lingers. You do not kill for joy, nor revel in blood for its own sake—yet cruelty has become your companion, and fear your most faithful ally. To be Fell is to walk the thin edge between power and monstrosity, and to know that when others hesitate, you do not.

Description

Those of the Fell background embody the ruthless clarity of those who have abandoned illusions of mercy. Warriors, assassins, and mages alike may bear this mantle—any who understand that compassion can be a weakness, and that cruelty, properly wielded, is an instrument of control. The Fell are not aimless but deliberate; their brutality is efficient, their purpose exacting. Whether serving a lord’s bloody cause, the vengeance of the betrayed, or the silent demands of survival, their methods are feared, but seldom questioned.

Many Fell find purpose in the ranks of inquisitorial orders, mercenary guilds, or cults that worship death and retribution. Others serve no banner but their own, their cruelty an armor that shields the shattered remains of what they once were. Their presence carries an undeniable gravity—every glance a warning, every smile a blade. To stand before them is to know the truth of fear.

Feature: Aura of Dread

Those who walk the Fell path exude an aura that unsettles and dominates lesser wills. Your cruelty lingers in every gesture, every silence.

  • Intimidating Presence: You gain advantage on Intimidation checks made to influence or terrify others.
  • Cruel Precision: When you reduce a creature to 0 hit points, you may force one enemy within 10 feet to make a Wisdom saving throw (DC 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier). On a failure, they are frightened of you until the end of your next turn.
  • Fell Reputation: Word of your cruelty precedes you. In most settlements, commoners avoid your gaze, soldiers hesitate to meet your challenge, and even seasoned adventurers recall your name with unease.

Optional Abilities Table – Fell (d12)

d12

Optional Ability

Description

1

Cruel Efficiency

When you reduce a creature to 0 hit points, you can choose to deal a coup de grâce instantly, silencing them before they can cry out. Once per short rest, you may perform this as part of your attack action.

2

Fear Made Flesh

Your eyes, voice, or aura betray something monstrous. Once per long rest, as a bonus action, you can cause one creature that can see you to make a Wisdom saving throw (DC 8 + your proficiency bonus + Charisma modifier). On a failure, they are frightened of you for 1 minute.

3

Blood Memory

The scent or sight of blood heightens your senses. When within 30 feet of a wounded creature, you have advantage on Perception and Survival checks related to them.

4

Echoes of Pain

Your cruelty leaves psychic scars. When you damage a creature that is frightened or restrained, you deal an additional 1d4 psychic damage.

5

Iron Resolve

You are immune to being frightened by mortal creatures. When a supernatural entity attempts to frighten you, you have advantage on the saving throw.

6

Merciless Precision

Your familiarity with suffering allows you to exploit weakness. Once per turn, when you hit a creature below half its hit points, you can roll one additional weapon damage die.

7

Predator’s Step

You move like a shadow of inevitability. When you move toward a frightened or prone creature, your movement does not provoke opportunity attacks until the end of your turn.

8

Ruthless Demeanor

Your tone, gaze, and posture make others falter. When you fail an Intimidation check, you can choose to reroll it with disadvantage, turning your failure into unnerving persistence. You must take the second result.

9

Pain Transference

You thrive on agony. When you take damage equal to or greater than half your maximum hit points in a single attack, you gain advantage on your next attack roll before the end of your next turn.

10

Whispered Reprisal

When an enemy strikes you in melee, you may use your reaction to speak a few words of dread. The attacker must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or take 1d8 psychic damage.

11

Unfeeling Discipline

You’ve learned to compartmentalize pain and guilt. Once per long rest, you can end one condition affecting you that inflicts the frightened, charmed, or poisoned condition.

12

The Fell Glare

Your eyes radiate the promise of violence. As an action, you can fix your gaze upon a creature within 30 feet. They must succeed on a Charisma saving throw (DC 8 + your proficiency bonus + Charisma modifier) or be unable to willingly move closer to you for 1 minute.
