To destroy one of the monsters plaguing the land, Matanera pleaded with the Fates. He was near death, so was his foe. The Fates warned him that if it was to be his wish, he would be cursed as one of oaths. But, the Twin Titans had already given out the Oath of Peace. But his bloodline was a different story. At least 500 years later.

Under the stars that shine so brightly

A song of sorrow she will hear so lightly.

The sign of the Prisoner she will become,

As this curse of transformation to succumb.

Your last heir so distant ahead we see.

Doomed in the path forever she'll be.

Feathers shall bloom where mercy departs.

'Till the Furies descend and devours her heart.

Matanera defeated his foe, but the Fates' prophecy was instilled in his mind. He made sure to pass it down to every generation, and they avoided giving birth under the sign of The Prisoner. But one night, there was a fight between Zana (Matanera's Descendant) along with her husband, Cassara, against their neighbor, Renan.  Renan longed to touch Zana in ways Cassara would have killed him for it. He watched for years, his lust slowly eating away at him. Every move Zana made had him quivering in his pants. When Zana and Cassar made love, he watched, touching himself as if he were the one who held her so lovingly. Even simple things, such as how Zana would giggle at a joke she made with her friends, brought about the throbbing ache in his pants. He would wait until the couple left before breaking into their house, stealing her undergarments, running his nose through them.

Finally, he couldn't take the pain anymore. Why should Cassara be the only one to have her? There was a mysterious woman in the mountains who played too much with the herbs around her. He explained what he wanted, what he needed. Hesitantly, she gave Renan a mixture of Epimedium, Nutmeg, Cayenne, and Yohimbe. Then, he bided his time.

Cassara went to farm the fields, leaving Zana alone. Renan woke her, quickly forcing her to drink the concoction. Zana tried to fight back, but Renan had her where he wanted. But it was hot that day, and Cassara came home in time to find Zana weakly trying to push Renan away. Cassara grabbed a knife and plunged it into Renan's back over and over until he was a mere lifeless body. Zana was getting hot, her panting with an unquenchable thirst. She grabbed Cassara, kissing him and trying to take him. He calmed her down a little, but he knew he needed to break whatever ailed her.  With Zana in her arms, he visited the mysterious woman in the mountains asking for a cure. The potion was powerful and there was no simple cure for it. She told him to give her what she desired or she would die. Pointing to another room, she wished them luck. After another night of making love, she became pregnant.

On the eve of The Prisoner star sign, Zana went into labor. She tried to hurry before The Prisoner came for the year, but to no avail. As soon as the star sign came, Zana gave birth. They decided to name her Cassandra after her father. It was supposed to be a momentous occasion, but Zana had an eerie feeling that crept on her skin. The words of the prophecy whispered in her ear by a voice so dark, like a creaking door in the gates of the Underworld. She gulped, giving her husband a look of despair.

No one knew what happened that night. The other neighbors came by after Cassandra kept crying. There, they found her in the arms of her mother, hungry for milk. Zana, however, was lifeless. Blood dripped from her eyes, ears, and mouth. Next to her was Cassara, the same, but holding onto his wife, even in death.

A strange sight to see indeed. The neighbors couldn't just leave the baby and was taken home to another woman who also gave birth. There, Cassandra was fed until she was able to eat food. Times were hard, and the neighbors couldn't take care of another mouth to feed. They brought her to a temple where she worshipped Lutheria. As fearful as everyone was to Lutheria, Cassandra felt at home in the temple.

A few of the temple workers taught her the sleight of hand, which she thought was strange, as they were temple workers. But it was another skill learned. She was sent out to steal from the rich of Mytros, and they convinced her it was for the good of the world. She believed it. There were so many poor and homeless folk, yet the rich looked down on them and treated them horribly.

An oracle came by on her 13th birthday, and that was when Cassandra's life changed. The Oracle's eyes rolled back, chanting a prophecy from long ago. The townsfolk heard it, pushing her our of the temple and out of the city. They kept her from telling any of the workers what they were doing. No one dared touch her or talk to her.  Everywhere she went, something bad would happen.  Someone once died when she had tried to joke about it.  Other's would lose things they needed and find them after she left.  Little pelts of bad luck followed her around and she had to be extra careful with what she said or did.

Having no other choice, she stole money for food at near Estoria and lived in The Old Woods. To hide herself, she wore a long black cloak. Soon, she was able to live her life as a rogue, stealing what she needed and conning whoever she pleased.

When she turned 21, a cat passed her, and she sneezed. A feather came out of her hood. She looked at her arms, where bony spikes forced their way out. The bony spikes grew feathers as she screamed in pain. Confused, she hurried to the forest, stumbling from the changes in her body. She took her robe off, where a burst of wings pierced through her back. She bathed in her own blood, writing in pain until she passed out.

Even sleep didn't bring her peace. The prophecy was whispered to her ears, and the Fates visited. But they gave her an out. If she could find the Cloak of Invisibility, she would be free from the creatures destined to end her. Cassandra got rid of her last name as it became a name people knew everywhere as a cursed name: Palakis. She became Cassandra Vulpes. Her facial features also changed as her transformation began. Her brown eyes turned amber gold, and her brown hair darkened to a shade of night purple.

It took a couple of years, but by the time she was 23, she had learned to use her new abilities. Death may have been coming, but at least she was gifted tricks. She would sing to travelers or innkeepers, making them hand over treasure or get a free room. She used her voice to get whatever information she wanted. It wasn't just her voice. She learned other ways to fight. Her robberies caught the attention of the Secret Society for the Criminally Insane (SSCI). There, she trained underground and was given jobs as an Oath of Service. They weren't friends, but they were allies.

At 25, a dream came to her. Another Oracle. It was time. She left the SSCI, thanking them for taking her in. They assured her that she was still a part of them and if she needed, they were just a secret code away. She packed her common-made chakram (hoping to find a nice one on the way), her light crossbow, and a short sword, and set off.
