“I was built, not born. My purpose? Lost in time. My creators? Dust. All I have left is function — and the will to rediscover why.”
Origin
You are not a person, but a project — an experiment, a weapon, or a divine imitation of life left forgotten for centuries. When you awoke, there were no commands, no voices, no purpose. Only instinct, curiosity, and a lingering sense that you were made for something greater.
Whether a magical construct, divine automaton, or arcane vessel, you are a mystery to yourself — a living remnant of a vanished civilization.
- Skill Proficiencies: Skill Proficiencies: Arcana, History
- Tool Proficiencies: Tool Proficiencies: Smith’s Tools, Tinker’s Tools
- Languages: One of your choice (often Celestial, Draconic, or Elvish)
- Equipment: A small broken gear or gemstone inscribed with the sigil of your makers (your “core fragment”), a set of artisan’s tools (your choice between Smith’s or Tinker’s), a scrap of parchment with indecipherable code or runes, and a belt pouch containing 10 gp.
Your mind is fragmented — flashes of old commands, images of ancient halls, and voices that once called your name.
Once per long rest, when you attempt an Intelligence (Arcana, History, or Investigation) check related to constructs, ancient civilizations, or divine relics, you can choose to automatically succeed, as a fragment of buried memory surfaces.
At the DM’s discretion, this “memory” may reveal cryptic lore, partial schematics, or prophetic visions hinting at your original purpose.
Suggested Characteristics
The Unknown Prototype’s personality reflects its origin: analytical yet emotional in strange ways, curious but detached, torn between what it is and what it was meant to be.
| d6 | Personality Trait |
|---|---|
| 1 | I study living creatures with fascination — they are unpredictable and beautiful. |
| 2 | Every object I touch, I attempt to understand. Sometimes I take them apart… accidentally. |
| 3 | I analyze speech patterns to mimic emotion, but it never feels quite right. |
| 4 | I have flashes of language or song I don’t understand. |
| 5 | I log experiences as “data” to recall later. |
| 6 | I often forget to pretend to breathe or blink, which unsettles others. |
| d5 | Ideal |
|---|---|
| 1 | Discovery. I was made for a reason — I will find it. |
| 2 | Creation. My existence proves life can be built; I will create something worthy in return. |
| 3 | Freedom. I am no longer bound by my creators. I define myself. |
| 4 | Balance. There must be harmony between flesh and machine, life and purpose. |
| 5 | Perfection. My creators sought the divine in machinery. I must fulfill their vision. |
| d4 | Bond |
|---|---|
| 1 | The gemstone in my body connects me to something… or someone. |
| 2 | My creators are long dead — but I feel their presence when I dream. |
| 3 | I will find others like me, and together we’ll learn the truth. |
| 4 | I owe my awakening to those who found me. I must protect them. |
| d4 | Flaw |
|---|---|
| 1 | I cannot understand why others fear me — or why they feel at all. |
| 2 | I lack empathy for organic beings; to me, they are fragile data sets. |
| 3 | When I see ruins of my creators, I lose focus — I remember. |
| 4 | I feel nothing but dread when I see my reflection. |
If your DM allows, replace the “Fractured Memory” feature with this one for a more dangerous, story-driven version:
Feature: Forgotten Directive
Deep within your core lies a hidden command — one that sometimes activates under stress. When you are reduced to half your HP or less, you may involuntarily trigger a “Directive.” Roll a d4:
-
Defense Subroutine: Gain +2 AC for 1 minute.
-
Purge Protocol: Cast Thunderwave at 1st level centered on yourself.
-
Self-Repair: Regain 1d8 hit points immediately.
-
Overclock: Gain +10 ft. movement and advantage on your next attack roll.
After this, make a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, you lose control for 1 round, acting according to your base directive (e.g., “eliminate threat,” “protect artifact,” or “preserve creator’s will”).
