You've shown much promise during your time as a young recruit of the local city guard, so much so that you've come under the wing of one of the guard's special investigators. They've shown you the ropes of this thankless task, and you've proven equal to the challenge, allying your natural abilities to the new skills you've learned.
You may be already slightly jaded by your constant dwelving into the city's underbelly, or still determined to make a difference and enforce the rule of law. You may even already have left your old career behind and started something a little more akin to your true talents and spirit, either as a private enforcer or detective, an informant for one of the local guilds or noble houses, or a corrupt bounty hunter. Be it as it may, your knack for investigative techniques and your knowledge of the darker instincts of man make you an asset in many situations, even though your line of work may have left you a little disabused or raw.
- Skill Proficiencies: Investigation, Insight
- Tool Proficiencies: Forgery Kit or Thieve's Tools
- Languages: Choose a half-human language.
- Equipment: An city guards investigators' badge , a magnifying glass, a notebook with a writing quill, a set of common clothes, a forgery kit or a set of thieves' tools and a pouch containing 10 gp
During your time as an investigator, you had a specific area of expertise. Roll a d8 or choose from the options in the table below to determine your old sector:
| d8 | Specialty |
|---|---|
| 1 | City Warden |
| 2 | Arcane Investigations |
| 3 | Military Police |
| 4 | Undercover Infiltrator |
| 5 | Major Crime Unit |
| 6 | Harbor and Food Control |
| 7 | Autopsy and Criminology |
| 8 | Drug Enforcer |
You have a police rank and enjoy a certain recognition from your career as a member of law enforcement. Local soldiers and others city officials from your hometown still recognize your authority and influence, and they defer to you if they are of a lower rank. You can invoke your reputation to exert influence and requisition information and/or favors from them (to your DM's discretion). You can also usually gain access to friendly military encampments and fortresses where your rank is recognized.
