You are a member of the Assembly of the Night, a neutral religious order devoted to Nocturnal, goddess of night, darkness, and mystery. Drawn from all trades and walks of life, the Assembly does not seek conquest or purification, but understanding. Its followers believe that the truths hidden by darkness are neither good nor evil — only unknown — and that knowledge gained through endurance is sacred.
Most members serve as scholars, observers, or keepers of lore. A rare few, however, willingly venture into places others refuse to tread: ancient ruins, cursed woods, and lightless depths where mortal instincts falter. Those who repeatedly descend into such darkness, return with knowledge rather than glory, and choose to continue despite the cost are recognized as Darkness Wanderers.
Once every three years, the Assembly gathers at a secret shrine near the apex of the highest mountain at night. There, Darkness Wanderers share what they have learned and participate in a ritual led by Nocturnal’s clerics, seeking clarity, protection, and the resolve to face the unknown once more.

Long exposure to lightless places and unseen threats has reshaped your instincts. You no longer rely on sight alone to remain aware of danger; instead, you orient yourself through sound, memory, and subtle disturbances in your surroundings. Even when visibility fails, your vigilance does not.
While in nonmagical darkness, you still suffer disadvantage on attack rolls as normal. However, creatures that make audible noise while moving do not gain advantage on attack rolls against you solely for being unseen. This benefit does not apply against creatures that are silent, incorporeal, magically muffled, or otherwise leave no audible trace.
In addition, while in nonmagical darkness, you do not suffer disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) or Intelligence (Investigation) checks that rely on hearing, spatial awareness, or environmental clues rather than sight.
This feature does not grant darkvision, blindsight, tremorsense, or any other special sense.
Suggested Characteristics
A Darkness Wanderer is shaped by endurance rather than belief. Repeated exposure to hidden predators, unnatural silence, and unseen movement sharpens their awareness and erodes reliance on sight. They learn to listen for danger, remember spaces by instinct, and remain alert even when surrounded by darkness.
Many adopt cautious routines and habits that others find excessive, maintaining a constant readiness born of experience. Though they often attempt to blend into ordinary society, their mannerisms betray someone who has learned — through necessity — that some threats are best anticipated, not seen, and that survival in the dark demands attention others never develop.

|---|---|
| 1 | I listen far more than I speak, and I rarely relax unless I know exactly what surrounds me. |
| 2 | I am calm in situations that unsettle others, having learned that panic is deadlier than fear. |
| 3 | I habitually note exits, sounds, and changes in my environment, even in places that seem safe. |
| 4 | I speak carefully and deliberately, choosing words as if each one might carry weight beyond the moment. |
| 5 | I am patient and observant, content to watch and wait rather than rush toward answers. |
| 6 | I appear distant or detached, not from arrogance, but from long practice in keeping my focus inward. |

|---|---|
| 1 | Knowledge. What is hidden is not meant to be destroyed or glorified — only understood. (Neutral) |
| 2 | Endurance. Truth is earned by those who persist where others turn back. (Neutral) |
| 3 | Balance. Darkness and light are both necessary; favoring either blinds the mind. (Neutral) |
| 4 | Restraint. Not every mystery must be solved, and not every threat must be confronted. (Neutral) |
| 5 | Witness. Someone must see what others cannot—or will not—and remember it accurately. (Neutral) |
| 6 | Clarity. Fear distorts judgment; calm observation reveals what truly matters. (Neutral) |
| d6 | Bond |
|---|---|
| 1 | I owe my survival — and my purpose — to the Assembly of the Night, and I will return what I have learned. |
| 2 | I feel a quiet obligation to protect others from dangers they cannot perceive or understand. |
| 3 | I am bound to a place I once explored, where something unresolved still lingers in the dark. |
| 4 | I keep detailed records of my experiences, believing that knowledge unshared is knowledge wasted. |
| 5 | I was guided — or spared — by something in the darkness, and I do not yet know why. |
| 6 | The triennial gathering of the Assembly is my anchor; without it, I might drift too far inward. |
| d6 | Flaw |
|---|---|
| 1 | I am slow to trust reassurances and often assume unseen dangers remain. |
| 2 | I withhold information until I am certain it will not cause unnecessary harm — or panic. |
| 3 | I struggle to explain my instincts to others, especially when I cannot articulate why something feels wrong. |
| 4 | I am uncomfortable in bright, crowded, or noisy environments where my senses feel overwhelmed. |
| 5 | I rely too heavily on caution, sometimes missing opportunities because I hesitate. |
| 6 | I have difficulty relating to those who have never faced true darkness, and I make little effort to hide it. |
