Primeval Scion Image

You were never meant to exist in the modern age.

You descend from a lineage that predates the division of chromatic and metallic dragons—beings shaped closer to the first draconic archetype. Raised in isolation by elders, echoes, or instinct itself, you learned the world not through civilization, but through memory and inheritance. Civilization is something you study, not something you belong to.

Among the Drakaryn, Primeval Scions are often recognized as living continuations of ancient dragon-blood lines that predate elemental divergence. While Drakaryn characters commonly embody this role, the Primeval Scion background may represent any individual marked by primordial draconic ancestry, prophecy, or inheritance.

Ability Scores: Primeval Scions often favor awareness, memory, and perception over social convention or brute force. Wisdom and Intelligence are common expressions of inherited instinct and ancient knowledge, though individual scions may differ.
Feat: Primeval Scions do not gain a feat by default. However, characters with this background often qualify for draconic or lineage-specific feats at the DM’s discretion.
Skill Proficiencies: History, Perception
Tool Proficiencies: One artisan’s tool of your choice, often used for rune-carving, scale-inscription, or preservation of ancient markings.
Languages: You know Draconic, Primordial, and Void Speech. In addition, choose one of the following languages: Abyssal, Celestial, Deep Speech, Dwarvish, Elvish, Giant, Infernal, Sylvan, or Netherese.
Equipment: • A fragment of a primeval scale or fossilized claw
• Traveler’s clothes adapted for wings, tail, or non-humanoid anatomy
• A scholar’s pack

Marks of the First Brood

Primeval Scions often bear physical, behavioral, or symbolic traits that hint at their ancient lineage. These marks may be subtle or overt, and are not inherently magical.

d6 Marks of the First Brood
1 A faint heat shimmer surrounds you when emotions run high.
2 Your eyes briefly reflect draconic pupils in low light.
3 Ancient runes occasionally surface across your scales or skin.
4 Animals react to you with instinctive caution.
5 You dream of places that no longer exist.
6 Your presence causes old magic to subtly stir.

Feature: Echo of the First Brood

You possess an instinctive recognition of ancient draconic influence.

You can always identify draconic ruins, relics, bloodlines, or magical effects tied to dragons or proto-dragons. When interacting with true dragons or ancient draconic magic, such entities often sense something unsettlingly familiar about you. At the DM’s discretion, this may result in cautious respect, hesitation, or a momentary pause before hostility.

This feature provides social leverage and access to draconic lore, but does not grant combat advantages or compel behavior.

Suggested Characteristics

Primeval Scions tend to view the world through the lens of deep time rather than immediate consequence. They may appear distant, contemplative, or unsettlingly composed in situations others find urgent.

d4 Personality Trait
1 I observe before I act; most things feel younger than they should.
2 I speak rarely, but when I do, I expect to be heard.
3 I value continuity over comfort or convenience.
4 I struggle to understand urgency over legacy.
