The Hollow Sentinels, or Hol’Sen, are a dwindling order of politically unaligned monster hunters based primarily around Eshijan. Lacking central organization, individual members hunt eldritch horrors for reasons ranging from altruism to material gain, fighting with a weapon in one hand and magic in the other. Recruited from the dispossessed and those traumatized by occult encounters, initiates are trained in hidden safe houses by veteran spellswords and scholars. Only those who survive a deadly trial against a monstrous creature earn their place in the order, returning every few years to share their findings.
Once celebrated as "Shield-Scholars" who brought security to endangered settlements, their fading numbers and isolated, esoteric lifestyles have severely damaged their public standing. Unable to protect the populace as they once did, they are now frequently called "Hollow-men" by a populace that feels abandoned. This resentment is compounded by the Sentinels' natural friction with other factions; they deeply mistrust the stifling authority of the Magistratum and view the Knights of Damacar as mere mercenary thugs, preferring the operational freedom provided by chaotic noble rivalries.
The exact origin of the order remains a mystery, preserved through three distinct cultural myths. The Imperial Theory claims they were founded by a penitent Thorsian commander seeking to hunt down the echoes of his empire's hubris. The Royalist Theory positions them as gritty Eshijan patriots formed by a royal spymaster to combat the Magistratum using ancient techniques. Finally, the Supernatural Theory whispers of a grief-stricken man who bartered his soul to the twin moons, becoming a secretive, undetectable wraith to avenge his destroyed village.
