You are an experienced crime fighter - just not a law abiding one. You are above the law, above morality, and above consequences. Whatever crime you are passionate about stopping, you will do whatever it takes to stop perpetuators. You are willing to kill in the name of justice, whatever that means to you. You can work with your DM to decide if your character has a friendly or hostile relationship with local law enforcement.

While your position as a vigilante law enforcement officer is not very different from a regular vigilante, it comes with an extra set of pros/cons. Pros: you are able to more easily obtain weapons and intel, and you are at no risk of being arrested. Furthermore, no one looks at you like a scoundrel. Cons: you have to keep your vigilante antics a secret, as well as your identity. This means less freedom, and less time spent doing what you want. You have a responsibility, after all.
Since you are one of their ranks, guards are automatically friendly towards you.
