Ancient Knight Image

You are a living relic—a warrior from a legendary Order of Knights that vanished into the annals of history centuries, or perhaps millennia, ago. Whether by a magical slumber, a planar displacement, or an unnaturally long life, you have outlived your purpose. You wander the modern world as a ghost of the past, carrying the weight of a legacy that no living scholar remembers correctly.

Ability Scores:
Your life spent in grueling service to an ancient order has forged a body of iron and a will of steel. Whether through the heavy plate you once wore or the endless miles you have marched across forgotten centuries, your physical resilience is your greatest remaining asset.
  • Benefit: You increase your score by 2, and another score by 1. Choose from Strength, Constitution, and Wisdom.
Feat: You retain the fundamental martial training of your lost era. Granting you a tactical edge in combat, reflecting the superior techniques of a more disciplined age.

  • Feat: Tough (Origin)
Skill Proficiencies:
You gain proficiency in Athletics and History.
  • Athletics represents the muscle memory of your knightly drills.
  • History reflects your firsthand experience; you aren't recalling facts from a book, but rather the sights, smells, and faces of a world that others only read about.
Tool Proficiencies: You are proficient with one type of Gaming Set or Smith’s Tools. This is usually an ancient strategy game, such as Three-Dragon Ante or a regional variation of Chess, that has long since fallen out of fashion among the common folk.
Languages: You know one Ancient Language or Ancient version of a Common tongue. This is the tongue of your lost empire or the liturgical language used by your Order during their secret rites.
Equipment: A set of Rusted Armor(Mechanically Ring mail), a gaming set you are proficient with, a signet ring or tattered cloak bearing the sigil of your dead Order, and a pouch containing 30 GP.

Feature: Echoes of the Past

Your knowledge of the past isn't academic—it's personal. When you enter a ruin or see a coat of arms, you may recall specific details that have been lost to time. You can identify the original purpose of ancient architecture, locate hidden "knight-passages" in old fortifications, or recognize the true lineage of a noble family whose ancestors served alongside you. Scholars may treat you as a curiosity or a fraud, but those who listen find your insights invaluable.

Suggested Characteristics

Fallen Knights are defined by their displacement. Some are noble statues of a better time, while others are bitter husks who feel the world has "rotted" in their absence. Use the tables below to determine how your ancient Vows affect your current personality.

d8 Personality Trait
1 I constantly compare modern architecture and fortifications to the "superior" ones of my youth.
2 I speak of historical figures as if they were personal friends—because to me, they were.
3 I often ask for directions to cities that have been dust for centuries and find the fast pace of modern life overwhelming.
4 I am obsessively protective of my gear; it is the last physical proof that my Order existed.
5 I am quiet and observant, constantly looking for the ruins of places I used to know.
6 I have hung up my thirst for glory; I would much rather discuss the quality of a local harvest than the details of a battle.
7 I have a habit of singing marching songs in a language that no one has heard for a thousand years.
8 I am worn out and I feel alone in this new unfamiliar world.
d8 Ideal
1 Legacy. I must find a worthy apprentice to carry on the techniques of my Order. (Any)
2 Belonging. The world has changed, but the need for a home hasn't. I will find a new hearth to protect, even if the faces are unfamiliar. (Neutral)
3 Honor. A knight’s word is a contract written in blood, even if the king I swore it to is dust. (Lawful)
4 Stewardship. The world has become chaotic since my Order fell; I will restore structure. (Lawful)
5 Truth. History has painted my people as villains/heroes; I am here to set the record straight. (Neutral)
6 Closure. I am the last page of a dead book. I just want to see how the story ends. (Any)
7 Adaptation. The old ways died for a reason. I must learn why and become something better. (Chaotic)
8 Serenity. My past was written in blood and stone. I choose to write my future in quiet moments and simple kindness. (Good)
d6 Bond
1 I seek the descendant of the squire I failed to protect during the fall.
2 I have a map to a hidden vault that only a Knight of my Order can open.
3 The New Home. I have found a small village or a group of people that doesn't care about my past, and I will do anything to stay worthy of them.
4 The Simple Life. I carry a small gardening tool or a cooking recipe—symbols of the peaceful life I am trying to build.
5 The Blueprint. I carry a set of ancient architectural plans; I hope to one day build a fortress that rivals the "superior" ones of my youth.
6 I am searching for the place, where my brothers-in-arms might once visited or once engaged in the battle.
d6 Flaw
1 I suffer from "The Long Sleep"—I occasionally forget which century I am in or forgot most of my memories.
2 I am incredibly stubborn and refuse to use "new-fangled" technology or magic.
3 I judge people based on their ancestors' reputations, not their own actions.
4 I believe that only a Knight of my Order is truly capable of leading, making me a poor follower.
5 I am terrified of being forgotten; I will take any risk to ensure my name is recorded in a book.
6 I am so desperate for peace that I may turn a blind eye to a fight that truly needs my sword.
