By some means, you apprenticed with one of the famed Wizards of the Realm. Perhaps your parents made a charitable donation to a personal library, perhaps you were a magical prodigy, or perhaps you were the nearest breathing young person when other wizards commented on your mentor's lack of living apprentices. In any event, your time spent hauling books, refilling ink wells, and transcribing scrolls left a profound impact on you.

In popular culture, almost all Wizards adopt latinate pseudonyms: fake names that convey an air of mystery. Popular mythos suggests that knowing a wizard's "true" name gives power over them, but this is not strictly true as it is for fiends and fey. Rather, as politically powerful mystics, most wizards adopt a public-facing name to obscure the connections they have with others who can peak 'behind the mask.' Additionally, donning a fantastical name wows commoners and nobility alike - often to the emotional exhaustion of the Wizard. If you adopt this artificial persona, you gain advantage on all social checks with magic-respecting people. Additionally, all Wizards in the nearby regions begin the story aware of your existence and promise (or lack thereof) as a potential Wizard. If you adopt a Wizardly name while being unable to manifest any magical abilities, you may succeed in conjuring adversity out of disinterest.
Suggested Characteristics
Apprentices are usually not accomplished and have little magical experience. They may seek to become a powerful mage, or be on the run from their master. Their ideals often reflect the wizard they serve, or they may disagree with their wizard's motivations. They may be plagued with doubts about their abilities or drastically overestimate them.

You may choose to use the Sage feature "Researcher" if your character isn't planning on adopting a silly Wizard name, to represent time spent sneaking into the library to read from tomes, or knowledge of your master's contacts in other cities and towns. Consult the basic rules for more information on the Sage Background.
