The sea has been your home for as long as you can recall. You learned to climb rigging before you could walk a straight line, studied the ways of wind and tide, and mastered the art of taking what you need from those too weak—or too foolish—to defend it. You might have served under a notorious captain in a cutthroat crew, sailed as part of a loose fraternity of raiders, or commanded your own ship feared across the coasts.
When you choose this background, work with your DM to decide which crew you sailed with, what seas or kingdoms you plundered, and how your piracy shaped your reputation. Did you serve under a charismatic leader whose name still inspires loyalty or curses? Were you a dashing privateer sanctioned by a crown, or an infamous marauder wanted in half the ports of the realm? Perhaps you still dream of finding the legendary treasure that first set you on the pirate’s path—or of earning a pardon and a life ashore, if the sea ever lets you go

You carry a reputation earned through your years as a pirate—whether as a bold raider, a cunning navigator, or a ruthless deckhand. Pirates, smugglers, and sailors who’ve heard of your former crew or captain often recognize your name or your mark and treat you with wary respect. You can invoke this reputation to request shelter, passage, or minor favors from those sympathetic to pirates or impressed by your deeds. In friendly ports or hidden coves, you can often find a ship willing to take you aboard, a tavern that will serve you even when others would not, or a fence willing to move your goods with few questions asked.
