Inquisitor (2014 Rules) Image

You were trained to uncover truths others would rather keep buried—and to make sure those truths came out, one way or another. Whether you served a church, crown, arcane order, or independent authority, your role was to investigate wrongdoing, root out corruption, and extract confessions from the guilty.

You might have been a feared interrogator, a relentless detective, or a sanctioned hunter of heretics, spies, or criminals. Your presence alone can make people nervous—and when that fails, your methods rarely do.

Some inquisitors serve justice. Others serve power. And a few serve only themselves.

Skill Proficiencies:

  • Investigation
  • Intimidation

Tool Proficiencies:

  • Calligrapher’s Supplies (for records, warrants, confessions)
  • One type of gaming set or Thieves’ Tools (your choice, depending on how you worked)

Languages: One of your choice (often tied to your organization’s work)
Equipment:

  • A set of traveler’s clothes
  • Calligrapher’s supplies
  • A small ledger of cases, suspects, or observations
  • A signet, badge, or token of authority (real or former)
  • A belt pouch containing 15 gp

Feature: Authority of Dread

You carry the reputation—or at least the bearing—of someone who extracts answers for a living. In settlements where your role would be recognized (law enforcement, religious authority, or similar), common folk and minor officials are inclined to cooperate with your investigations, even if reluctantly.

Even where your authority isn’t official, your demeanor grants advantage in gaining access to basic information, provided you can apply pressure or imply consequences. However, those with power, influence, or secrets may resent or resist you—and your reputation can open as many doors as it closes.
