Gilded Trigger Image

"A crude weapon is only crude in crude hands. In mine, it is an argument."
— Lord Caelvar Rhost, marksman of Veyndral’s private salons

Introduction

You are not a common sellsword, back-alley bravo, or frontier hunter. You learned the firearm in drawing rooms, private galleries, noble hunting preserves, fenced courtyards, dueling yards, or hidden workshops where wealth and curiosity meet danger. To you, the firearm is more than a weapon. It is an instrument of precision, modernity, status, and carefully applied force.

A Gilded Trigger moves comfortably through the upper classes while carrying one of Aetheris’s most disruptive inventions. You know how to bow correctly, read a wine list, recognize a counterfeit signet, and fire a shot across a ballroom without striking the wrong guest. Some with this background are aristocratic sportsmen who first handled firearms on private hunts. Others are city-born vigilants, discreet agents, noble investigators, guild-backed problem solvers, or refined duelists who have turned new technology against murderers, extortionists, cultists, and monsters wearing respectable faces.

This background uses the established Aetheris Background Template, including proficiencies, features, ability bonuses, feats, equipment, characteristics, contacts, and a closing quote. It also exists beside Aetheris’s broader firearm traditions, especially groups such as the Black Watch, who are known for firearm mastery, technomagical weaponry, covert work, and controlling the spread of these dangerous innovations.

Description

You discovered firearms in a world still deciding whether they are marvels, scandals, necessities, or heralds of a harsher age. In the city, such weapons carry implications beyond combat. A blade can be tradition. A spell can be lineage. A firearm is disruption. Its report cuts across social rank, old law, and inherited power with the brutal honesty of thunder in a marble hall.

Perhaps you were born to wealth and first used a long gun on noble estates, shooting glasswing pheasants, ridge deer, or dangerous beasts released for sport. Perhaps you were a barrister’s child, guild heir, academy dropout, courtier, investigator, or merchant scion who saw what a firearm could do in the hands of someone calm enough to aim. You may have trained under a dueling master, a retired military officer, a discreet gunsmith, a private artificer, or a disgraced operative who believed refinement and violence need not be strangers.

You know how to pass among people who would never admit they fear you. You attend galas, auctions, trials, guild banquets, opera halls, political receptions, and private salons, watching who whispers, who lies, and who leaves before the final course. When wickedness hides behind titles, masks, wealth, or polished etiquette, you know how to get close enough to expose it.

Some Gilded Triggers are genuine protectors of the city. Others are vain, ruthless, theatrical, or dangerously self-appointed. Many are all of these things at once. Aetheris does not lack monsters in the wild, but you learned that some of the worst ones wear perfume, sign contracts, and own balconies.

Background Feature: Invitation and Investigation

You know how to enter refined society without appearing out of place. In cities, noble districts, guild halls, wealthy merchant houses, courts, academies, private clubs, and formal events, you can usually secure an invitation, temporary introduction, or plausible reason to be present, provided such access is not magically restricted or actively hostile to you.

While moving through these circles, you can gather rumors, identify social tensions, recognize who holds influence, and determine which figures are feared, protected, indebted, or quietly despised. You may not learn secrets automatically, but you know where secrets gather: card rooms, balconies, wine cellars, estate hunts, smoking parlors, private libraries, carriage houses, and servants’ corridors.

Additionally, when investigating crimes involving firearms, rare ammunition, duels, noble feuds, hired killers, or technomagical weaponry, you can usually identify whether the act was amateur, professional, military, guild-backed, or staged to mislead.

Optional Secondary Feature: Duelist’s Reputation

Your name, family, style, or past deeds are known among a narrow but influential set of city dwellers. In places where formal duels, private hunts, firearm exhibitions, or elite weapon clubs exist, people may recognize you as a person of dangerous skill.

This reputation can earn you respect, invitations, cautious treatment, or unwanted challenges. A rival may seek to best you. A magistrate may watch you closely. A frightened noble may quietly ask for your help when official law cannot be trusted.

You are trained to read intent, navigate conversation, and move through polite society without surrendering control of the room.

Additional Skill Option: With DM approval, you may replace either skill with Investigation or Perception if your character leans more toward detective work or urban vigilantism.

Observant

Firearm Familiarity

With DM approval, you gain proficiency with one firearm appropriate to an urban, refined, or elite character concept. Suitable choices include a pistol, dueling pistol, pepperbox, revolving pistol, compact carbine, hunting rifle, or finely made sporting long gun.

You do not automatically begin with a firearm unless the DM allows it as part of your starting equipment. Gilded Trigger Contacts

Your contacts are often found among the strata where law, money, gossip, and danger intersect. You might know a discreet gunsmith who serves noble clients, a magistrate frustrated by untouchable criminals, a fencing master who now teaches pistol etiquette, a tailor who designs concealed holsters, a servant who hears everything, a journalist who trades in scandal, a private club steward, or a retired Black Watch operative who recognizes your technique and wonders who trained you.

These contacts can provide invitations, rumors, forged introductions, weapon maintenance, access to elite venues, or warnings when your name appears in the wrong conversation. In return, they may expect discretion, protection, favors, or the occasional removal of a threat too delicate for official hands.

Using This Background

The Gilded Trigger is ideal for Fighters, Rogues, Rangers, Artificers, Bards, Blood Hunters, or Paladins who blend refinement with firearm skill. It suits campaigns involving urban intrigue, noble corruption, occult crime, secret societies, firearm politics, courtly duels, civic vigilantism, and the uneasy rise of new technology.

This background pairs especially well with characters who can walk into a gala, identify the murderer before dessert, and still know precisely how far a pistol shot carries through a marble corridor. It is less rustic than the Blackpowder Outrider and less institutional than the Black Watch. The Gilded Trigger is personal, polished, and dangerous in the way a loaded weapon beneath silk is dangerous.

Summary

The Gilded Trigger is a refined urban firearm user who moves easily through the upper classes while applying new weapon technology against threats hidden within city life. Whether noble hunter, society investigator, civic protector, masked avenger, or elegant duelist, this character understands that danger does not always lurk in the wilderness. Sometimes it sits across the table, smiling over crystal glasses.

"The city has many beasts. The clever ones learned to wear cufflinks."
