"From the shadows, light emerges."
— Saying of the Evershade Sovereignty

Introduction

You were raised within the Evershade Sovereignty, an enigmatic elven realm in the dim forests of Silvanmyr on Velmyris. The Sovereignty is shaped by shadow magic, natural harmony, planar vigilance, and reverence for the balance between light and shadow, life and death, and memory and transition.

Description

Life in the Evershade Sovereignty is lived beneath a canopy of perpetual twilight, among darkwood trees, bioluminescent leaves, moonlit rivers, hidden archives, and glades where the border between the Material Plane and the Shadowfell thins to a whisper. The people of Evershade do not treat shadow as evil by nature. They treat it as power, mirror, warning, and teacher.

You may have grown up in Umbraeth, the Shadowed Crown; studied in the Veiled Archive; walked the Moonflow River by enchanted boat; trained near the Umbral Glades; served the Nightguard; apprenticed to the Planar Wardens; crafted nightbloom remedies; or carried messages between the Shadesworn Orders and the Twilight Court. The realm is governed by the Twilight Court, a magocratic oligarchy of nine Umbral Lords, with the First of Shadows guiding its spiritual and arcane direction.

You became an adventurer because balance is not maintained from one garden. Perhaps a planar omen sent you abroad, a Shadesworn superior charged you with recovering a shadowcrafted relic, a Matron’s priest marked you for a journey of transition, or you left after discovering corruption within the very institutions sworn to contain it. Perhaps the Shadowfell touched your life too closely, and now you seek either understanding or distance.

Whatever your reason, you carry the Sovereignty’s lesson with you: darkness is not always corruption, light is not always mercy, and every threshold asks what you are willing to become when you cross it.

Using This Background

This background is ideal for Wizards, Rogues, Rangers, Warlocks, Clerics, Druids, Bards, Monks, Fighters, and Sorcerers who want ties to shadow magic, elven mysticism, planar boundaries, fate, death, hidden courts, forest realms, and the difficult ethics of using dangerous power without becoming its servant.

An Evershade Twilight-Bound might be:

  • a Nightguard scout pursuing a Shadowfell-touched fugitive;
  • a Planar Warden apprentice investigating a growing rift;
  • an archivist carrying a forbidden text;
  • a Matron’s initiate guiding souls, omens, or transitions;
  • a shadowcrafter hunted for a relic they made;
  • a Twilight Court agent caught between rival Umbral Lords;
  • a survivor of corruption trying to prove darkness is not destiny.

This background works especially well in campaigns involving Shadowfell threats, elven politics, planar instability, hidden archives, moral ambiguity, fate, death rites, forest mysteries, shadowcrafted relics, and the quiet little terror of discovering that the thing in the dark knows your name because you introduced yourself years ago.

"Do not fear the shadow at your feet. Fear the day it points somewhere you refuse to walk."
— Matron-priest of Umbraeth

Feature: Gloaming Insight

Your Evershade upbringing trained you to read liminal spaces: shadowed courts, hidden motives, sacred transitions, planar disturbances, and places where beauty and danger overlap.

In forests, magical settlements, temples of fate or death, arcane courts, hidden libraries, planar borderlands, and communities touched by shadow or fey influence, you can usually identify:

  • who holds arcane, spiritual, or concealed political influence;
  • whether a disturbance is natural, magical, spiritual, planar, or corruptive;
  • what local customs govern mourning, secrecy, prophecy, transition, or forbidden knowledge;
  • where to find a guide, ritual expert, shadowcrafter, archive contact, or discreet sanctuary.

When you spend time observing a shadowed site, strange omen, magical dispute, mourning rite, hidden court, or planar anomaly, you can usually determine one useful truth: what threshold has been crossed, who is concealing fear, whether the shadow is being studied or exploited, or what action might restore balance before harm deepens.

You may also seek modest aid from Evershade scholars, Nightguard scouts, Shadesworn agents, Matron’s attendants, shadowcrafters, herbalists, or planar wardens. Such aid is often subtle, formal, and wrapped in riddles that think themselves very clever.

Suggested Characteristics
d6 Personality Trait
1 I speak softly because some truths bruise if handled loudly.
2 I watch reflections, shadows, and silences as carefully as faces.
3 I am calm around death, which makes some people deeply uncomfortable.
4 I prefer balance to victory, unless victory is the only way to restore balance.
5 I collect small omens and pretend not to believe in all of them.
6 I rarely answer a question directly when a more interesting answer can circle it first.
d6 Ideal
1 Balance: Light and shadow must both be understood, or both become dangerous.
2 Transition: Endings are doors, not failures.
3 Secrecy: Some truths must be guarded until the world is strong enough to hold them.
4 Harmony: Nature, magic, and spirit must not be severed from one another.
5 Vigilance: Planar power is a threshold, not a toy.
6 Mercy: Those touched by darkness are not automatically lost.
d6 Bond
1 I owe my training to a Nightguard mentor, Matron’s priest, warden, or shadowcrafter.
2 I carry a token from the Evershade Expanse and will not let it be profaned.
3 I must recover a relic, archive page, shadecrystal, or lost rite tied to my people.
4 I am bound to protect someone marked by shadow corruption.
5 I know a secret from the Twilight Court that could wound the Sovereignty.
6 I believe the Shadowfell can be understood without being obeyed.
d6 Flaw
1 I can mistake secrecy for wisdom.
2 I sometimes treat ordinary emotions as if they are philosophical problems.
3 I am too willing to study dangerous magic closely.
4 I struggle to trust people who see the world in simple moral colors.
5 I hide grief behind ritual composure.
6 I fear that part of me belongs more to shadow than to home.

Contacts

Your contacts may include Nightguard scouts, Planar Wardens, Shadesworn officials, Twilight Court attendants, Matron of Ravens priests, shadowplay performers, Veiled Archive scholars, nightbloom herbalists, shadecrystal merchants, Umbral Construct caretakers, and guides who know which trails are roads and which are invitations. These contacts can provide shadow-lore, discreet shelter, ritual guidance, herbal remedies, access to hidden records, warnings about planar instability, or introductions to selective trade partners. They rarely offer answers plainly. Plain answers, in Evershade, are considered suspiciously underdressed.
