"Survival is the first invention. Everything after that is refinement."
— Kaltheran forge maxim
Introduction
You were raised in the Dominion of Kaltheros, the frostbound technocratic power of Thaldrinor. Known as the “Forge of Aetheris,” Kaltheros blends industrial ambition, arcane engineering, mining wealth, geothermal power, and bitter-weather resilience into one formidable northern machine.
Description
Life in Kaltheros is measured in heat, pressure, efficiency, and endurance. Outside the foundry walls, blizzards scour the tundra and ice-choked fjords. Inside, furnaces roar, gears turn, automatons wake, and artificers argue over tolerances small enough to ruin empires if ignored.
You may have grown up in a mining town beneath the Frostspire Peaks, a shipyard along the Icefang Fjords, a geothermal forge-city, a guildhouse academy, or a workers’ district serving one of the Dominion’s great industrial houses. Perhaps you trained under the Assembly of Titans, apprenticed with the Consortium of Innovation, hauled cryostone from dangerous mines, maintained arcane machinery, served as a security engineer, or acted as a trade agent for Kaltheros’s expanding industrial interests.
You became an adventurer because invention has appetites. Rare minerals must be found. Lost schematics must be recovered. Rival guilds must be watched. Broken machines must be understood before they kill again. Or perhaps you left because the Dominion’s pursuit of progress began to look less like enlightenment and more like a furnace being fed with people.
Whatever your cause, you carry Kaltheros with you: practical, cold-eyed, inventive, hard to impress, and very unlikely to freeze before complaining about someone else’s workmanship.
Ability Score Bonuses
Kaltheran life rewards endurance, precision, intellect, and practical strength. Choose one:
- Intelligence +2, Constitution +1 for artificers, engineers, designers, and technical specialists
- Strength +2, Intelligence +1 for miners, forge-workers, construct handlers, and industrial guards
- Constitution +1, Intelligence +1, Wisdom +1 for scouts, surveyors, guild inspectors, and field repair experts
Using This Background
This background is ideal for Artificers, Fighters, Wizards, Rogues, Rangers, Clerics, Paladins, Barbarians, and Monks who want ties to industry, invention, mining, frost survival, arcane machinery, guild politics, construct work, or the ethical cost of progress.
A Kaltheran Forgebound might be:
- an artificer seeking rare components for a dangerous invention;
- a miner who found something impossible beneath the ice;
- a guild inspector investigating sabotage;
- a construct technician fleeing a creation gone wrong;
- a forge-priest who treats craftsmanship as sacred duty;
- a labor-born fighter hardened by industrial exploitation;
- a surveyor mapping ruins beneath the Frostspire Peaks;
- a reformer trying to keep progress from becoming a prettier word for consumption.
This background works especially well in campaigns involving lost technology, arcane industry, guild intrigue, frozen ruins, labor unrest, environmental damage, construct mysteries, mining expeditions, cold-weather survival, and the excellent disaster-category known as “we improved it until it exploded.”
"A machine is honest. It fails where it is weakest. People are harder, but the principle holds."

| d8 | Kaltheran Origin |
|---|---|
| 1 | You apprenticed in a geothermal forge where one mistake could freeze half the district or ignite the other half. |
| 2 | You worked a cryostone mine and saw something buried in the ice that was not ore. |
| 3 | A guild patron sent you abroad to recover rare components, stolen schematics, or rival secrets. |
| 4 | You served as a construct technician and still know the sound a machine makes before it chooses violence. |
| 5 | You were a surveyor mapping new extraction sites in the Frostspire Peaks. |
| 6 | An industrial accident killed people, and you suspect it was no accident. |
| 7 | You left after refusing to sacrifice workers, land, or truth in the name of progress. |
| 8 | You seek to build an invention worthy of Kaltheros, but not owned by Kaltheros. |
Your Kaltheran training taught you to understand industrial systems, guild hierarchies, engineered defenses, supply chains, mines, workshops, and arcane machinery.
In cities, mines, guildhalls, foundries, shipyards, military workshops, trade depots, and technologically advanced settlements, you can usually identify:
- who controls production, repairs, supply, or technical knowledge;
- whether a machine, structure, mine, or workshop is well-maintained, overstrained, sabotaged, or dangerously improvised;
- where to find replacement parts, skilled labor, fuel, ore, schematics, or technical records;
- which guild, house, engineer, clerk, or foreman truly keeps the operation functioning.
When you spend time observing an industrial site, damaged device, mining operation, guild dispute, construct, vehicle, or logistical failure, you can usually determine one useful truth: what is broken, who benefits from the failure, what resource is missing, or what risk everyone is pretending not to see.
You may also secure modest aid from Kaltheran artisans, miners, engineers, guild clerks, shipwrights, mercantile agents, or forge-priests. Their help is rarely sentimental. In Kaltheros, affection often arrives as a properly labeled toolkit.
