As empires and kingdoms expand, there will always be need of the most trusted scouts and pathfinders to survey new frontiers. You are neither of the wilds nor entirely of civilized society either though you freely pass between both, often giving you conflicting views on the balance between the natural and civilized worlds.
As Frontier Ranger your skill are refined as your jobs is two-fold. You must hone your skill of survival and exploration in the wilderness while maintaining courtly manners when reporting back to the capital. Some Frontier rangers are better at balancing these two aspects better than others. Some Frontier Rangers end up as commanders and officers, spending all their days managing logistics and resources to be sent to settlements from the confines of a fort, while others eschew bureaucracy and spend months at a time alone would in the untamed wilds surveying and scouting.
As a Frontier Ranger you can be called upon to act in a verity of roles, including but not limited to scout, path-finder, surveying, map-maker and cartographer, diplomat, elite escort and caravan guide.

- Tool Proficiencies: Pick one of the following: Cartographer's Tools, Herbalism Kit, Navigator's Tools
- Equipment: A set of artisan’s tools (one of your choice), a shovel, an iron pot, a set of common clothes, and a pouch containing 10 gp

As part of your training you know how to survive in the wilds for months at a time; you know how to hunt and forage enough food and fresh water for you and up to five other companions, provided the land offers berries, small game, water and so forth. You always know which way is north, and you always know how many hours are left until the next Sunset or sunrise.
Suggested Characteristics
Often considered the outsiders of the royal court, frontier rangers still have a strong bond with the wilds but some have taken more in favor of royal life. Their ties and bonds are often split between the natural world and with the kingdom they reside.

You are a Royal Ranger, who acts on behalf of the king himself. Whether appointed by the king's own hand, or a member or a royal corps or academy graduate, you represent your civilization's best interest in expanding their borders ever outward.
You can call upon the local lord or nobles for an audience, and gain advantage on all Deception, Intimidation and Persuasion checks against them.
