The mountain speaks. We make sure the enemy listens.”
Introduction
You trained among the high ridges of the Greypeak Range, where wind can ruin a shot, snow can erase a trail, and a single hidden marksman can change the fate of an entire pass. As a Greypeak Sentinel Initiate, you are not yet one of the fully proven ridge-ghosts of Helbranni legend, or perhaps you trained under them and now carry their methods into the wider world. Either way, you were shaped by patience, breath control, alpine stealth, long-distance observation, and the cold mathematics of terrain.
The Greypeak Sentinels are among the most feared martial traditions of the Helbrann League: scouts, sharpshooters, cliff-watchers, beast-slayers, and silent guardians who defend routes too narrow for armies and ridges too high for ordinary soldiers. Where Pike Legionaries hold the line, Sentinels decide where the battle begins.
This entry follows the Background Template structure for Aetheris backgrounds, including introduction, detailed description, background features, bonuses, feats, ability bonuses, specific table, equipment, characteristics, contacts, and closing quote.
Description
You learned your craft in places where mistakes fall for a long time. Greypeak training begins with endurance, but endurance alone is not enough. A Sentinel must be still when freezing, patient when afraid, precise when exhausted, and honest about every variable between weapon and target. Wind. Distance. Elevation. Snow glare. Breath. Powder condition. Trigger pull. Enemy movement. Friendly position. Stone stability. Escape route.
The Greypeak instructors teach that marksmanship is not the art of shooting. It is the art of deciding whether a shot should exist.
Initiates train for years before earning recognition. Some begin as pike soldiers selected for sharp eyes and colder nerves. Others come from hunting clans, Frostmantle outriders, Ironvein firearm workshops, Blackwall scouting teams, or Rimeborne tracking families. They learn to crawl across ice-crusted ledges, sleep under stone overhangs, signal through mirror flash and raven-code, and wait through blizzards while keeping their weapon dry.
Not every initiate becomes a full Greypeak Sentinel. Some fail the Greywake Shot, the legendary final marksmanship trial. Some are reassigned as scouts, rangefinders, bodyguards, or military observers. Some leave the highlands under Covenant Contract, carrying Sentinel discipline into distant wars. Others are sent abroad to hunt oathbreakers, monitor enemy movements, test firearms, guard envoys, or investigate threats that move through the world like a crack beneath snow.
A Greypeak Sentinel Initiate is not merely a sniper. They are a watcher at the edge of danger, trained to understand that sometimes the strongest wall is the unseen eye above it.

Using the Greypeak Sentinel Initiate Background
This background is ideal for players who want a character defined by observation, patience, cold-weather discipline, and highland military precision. It works especially well in campaigns involving mountain warfare, monster hunting, reconnaissance, firearms, assassination plots, caravan defense, political contracts, or ancient threats emerging from remote terrain.
A Greypeak Sentinel Initiate is not necessarily a fully sanctioned elite sniper. That uncertainty is part of the story. Perhaps you failed your final trial. Perhaps you were sent away before completion. Perhaps you are still being tested. Perhaps your mentor believed you were ready, while the canton did not. Perhaps the mountain passed judgment, and no officer has caught up yet.
In an adventuring party, you may serve as scout, overwatch, tactical observer, ranged striker, route-finder, quiet protector, or the person who notices that the “empty” ridge has been watching back.
“A pike line tells the enemy where we stand.
A Sentinel tells them where they should not have stood.”

| d12 | Greypeak Sentinel Initiate Experience Table |
|---|---|
| 1 | You failed the Greywake Shot by the width of a finger and left to prove that one missed mark does not define your life. |
| 2 | You passed every trial except the final silence vigil, where something in the snow spoke your name. |
| 3 | Your mentor vanished while tracking an enemy through Blackcliff Ridge. You still carry their range beads. |
| 4 | You served as a spotter for a full Sentinel and learned that the person who chooses the shot can be as important as the one who fires it. |
| 5 | You were sent abroad to study foreign firearms, crossbows, scopes, or battlefield tactics. |
| 6 | You saved a caravan by killing a charging beast from a ridge no one else could reach. |
| 7 | You hesitated once when ordered to shoot, and the consequences still follow you. |
| 8 | You witnessed a Covenant Contract employer betray Helbranni forces and now hunt the proof. |
| 9 | You trained in snow camouflage so thoroughly that your own unit once lost you for two days. |
| 10 | You were recruited from the Frostmantle outriders after guiding scouts through a storm that killed everyone else’s horses. |
| 11 | You recovered a broken rifle or heavy crossbow from a fallen Sentinel and believe it has unfinished work. |
| 12 | You saw a signal from the legendary Blackcliff Seven appear during a blizzard, though every official record says that signal should be impossible. |
Windcaller’s Memory
You were trained to read wind, weather, distance, and elevation with unsettling precision. Your body remembers how cold air bends sound, how snow glare tricks the eye, and how a mountain’s breath can push a projectile just enough to spare or doom a life.
Once per Long Rest, when you make a ranged weapon attack, you may ignore disadvantage caused by one of the following nonmagical conditions:
- High wind
- Falling snow
- Rain
- Fog
- Smoke or mist
- Unstable elevated footing
- Long-distance visibility distortion
- Shooting from a steep angle
You must be able to see or reasonably identify your target. This feature does not allow you to ignore total cover, magical concealment, blindness, or conditions that make the target impossible to perceive.
Outside combat, you can spend 10 minutes studying an area to identify the best natural overwatch position within sight. This reveals a suitable place for observation or ranged defense, assuming such a place exists and is reachable.
Ridge-Scout Recognition
Your training marks you as one of the Helbranni’s highland watchers. Among Helbranni soldiers, Greypeak veterans, roadwardens, caravan guards, firearm guilds, and certain allied military orders, your cloak marks, range beads, weapon maintenance habits, or ridge-signals may earn cautious recognition.
In settlements familiar with the Helbrann League or its Covenant companies, you can usually secure modest aid from military contacts, including:
- A dry place to sleep near a watchtower, barracks, guildhall, or caravan post
- Basic ammunition, bowstrings, powder supplies, or weapon oil at fair cost
- Information about local terrain, roads, patrols, or monster sightings
- Introductions to scouts, hunters, guards, or gunsmiths
- Access to high vantage points, signal towers, or observation posts when trust is established
This recognition is not celebrity. Greypeak culture values quiet competence. Boasting about Sentinel training is a wonderful way to be disliked by Sentinels.
Suggested Characteristics
| d8 | Personality Trait |
|---|---|
| 1 | I speak little because wind already carries too much noise. |
| 2 | I measure every room by sightlines, exits, and where I would hide if I meant harm. |
| 3 | I clean my weapon with almost religious focus. |
| 4 | I trust patient people more than charming ones. |
| 5 | I prefer high ground, cold air, and enough distance to think clearly. |
| 6 | I mark changes in weather before I notice changes in mood. |
| 7 | I never take a shot unless I know what stands behind the target. |
| 8 | I become unnervingly still when danger approaches. |
| d6 | Ideal |
|---|---|
| 1 | Precision. A careless action can kill the wrong person. |
| 2 | Vigilance. Evil often arrives quietly, so someone must be quieter. |
| 3 | Protection. The best battle is the one ended before it reaches the innocent. |
| 4 | Patience. The world reveals itself to those who can wait without blinking. |
| 5 | Duty. My post is wherever danger can be seen before others see it. |
| 6 | Truth. A clear sightline and an honest report are both sacred things. |
| d6 | Bond |
|---|---|
| 1 | My mentor disappeared on the ridge, and I will find out what took them. |
| 2 | I carry a weapon that belonged to a fallen Sentinel, and I intend to make it worthy again. |
| 3 | I owe my life to the spotter who corrected my aim in my first true battle. |
| 4 | My canton sent me abroad under sealed orders. I have not opened the final page. |
| 5 | I once spared a target I was ordered to kill, and that choice still hunts me. |
| 6 | I protect my companions because I have already watched too many people die from too far away. |
| d6 | Flaw |
|---|---|
| 1 | I struggle to act quickly when the “perfect” moment has not arrived. |
| 2 | I keep emotional distance because closeness makes the next loss harder to survive. |
| 3 | I assume people who are loud are also careless. |
| 4 | I sometimes treat others as targets, assets, or risks before remembering they are people. |
| 5 | I obsess over missed shots, failed watches, and tiny errors no one else remembers. |
| 6 | I am more comfortable watching from above than standing beside those who need me. |
Contacts
As a Greypeak Sentinel Initiate, your contacts may include ridge scouts, full Sentinels, Greypeak drillmasters, Frostmantle outriders, Ironvein gunsmiths, Hearthhold rune-etchers, Blackwall Engineers, caravan captains, Stonegate military scribes, and allied watch commanders across Aetheris. You may know a quartermaster who can acquire powder in bad weather, a gunsmith who refuses to praise your weapon but keeps repairing it anyway, a retired spotter with one eye and perfect memory, or a full Sentinel who appears only when they want something difficult done.
Your reputation depends on restraint. Other marksmen may admire speed, trophies, or dramatic kills. Greypeak veterans judge whether you report clearly, shoot only when needed, maintain your weapon, protect civilians, and leave no companion exposed because you were too proud of your perch.
