Desert Nomad (Bedouin) Image

You were raised in the infinite, shifting sands of the deep desert, born into a proud tribe of tent-dwelling pastoralists. Your youth was defined by the seasonal trek between known oases, the tracking of stray livestock through barren canyons, and the strict traditions of honor and hospitality that keep people alive in a land devoid of walls. You know how to read the horizon for distant dust storms, negotiate with rival caravans over well rights, and find life-saving water where others see only death.

Feat:

Law of the Tent (Oasis Hospitality) Your deep understanding of desert law grants you a sacred claim to hospitality wherever a fire is lit or water is drawn. When you encounter nomadic tribes, caravan masters, or desert-dwellers at an oasis or well, you can invoke the rites of shelter.

You and your companions can secure a safe place to rest within the camp, access to the water source for your mounts, and basic sustenance for up to three days, provided you do not violate the host's tribal taboos. Even rival factions who strictly follow these ancient laws will refrain from attacking you or denying you water while you are recognized as a guest at their oasis or camp.

Skill Proficiencies: Survival, choose one
Tool Proficiencies: Leatherworking
Languages: Primordal
Equipment: A curved dagger (janbiya), a set of traveler's clothes, a traditional headscarf (keffiyeh), a water skin made of animal hide, a small pouch containing roasted coffee beans or dried dates, and a pouch containing 10 gp.

Nomadic Role

Every nomad plays a vital part in the survival of their caravan during the seasonal migrations across the wastes. Consider the specific duty or calling you held within your tribe before setting out on your current journey. You can roll on this table or choose an option that best fits your character's backstory.

d4 Nomadic Role
1 Water-Finder. I specialized in reading the layout of the dunes, tracking low-flying birds, and using a reed flute or intuition to find hidden oases and subterranean springs.
2 Tribal Orator. I was trained in the ancient poetry and oral histories of our people, using song and story to keep spirits high during grueling marches and negotiate peace with other clans.
3 Beast-Pacer. My duty was caring for our pack animals and mounts, understanding their temperaments, and keeping them calm and moving through blinding dust storms.
4 Horizon-Scout. I rode ahead of the main caravan, charting the safest paths through treacherous canyon territories and looking for signs of incoming storms or ambush parties.

Suggested Characteristics

Desert Nomads are deeply shaped by the rhythmic, seasonal pace of the wastes and the strict laws of desert hospitality. They are patient observers who treat strangers with a blend of careful caution and profound respect, knowing that cooperation is the ultimate survival tool. They rarely stay in one place for long, always feeling the pull of the distant horizon and the shifting winds.

d4 Personality Trait
1 I judge people by how they treat their mounts and how carefully they conserve their water.
2 I have a song, poem, or traditional riddle for almost every natural phenomenon I encounter.
3 I am incredibly patient; I can sit perfectly still for hours under the scorching sun without complaining.
4 I feel deeply claustrophobic in large, stone cities and constantly seek out views of the open sky.
d3 Ideal
1 Hospitality. The laws of the desert dictate that you share your water and shelter with any peaceful traveler, for tomorrow you may be the one dying of thirst. (Good)
2 Wanderlust. The world is wide, and the sands never settle in one place. To stop moving is to invite stagnation and death. (Any)
3 Community. The caravan is everything. An individual cannot survive the wastes alone, but a united tribe can endure anything. (Lawful)
d3 Bond
1 I carry a beautifully carved reed flute passed down through my lineage; its music connects me to my ancestors.
2 I am searching for the scattered survivors of my original caravan, which was swallowed by a catastrophic sandstorm years ago.
3 I have sworn a blood oath to protect the companion who pulled me from the brink of death when the desert almost claimed me.
d3 Flaw
1 I am deeply suspicious of permanent structures and settlements, often sleeping outside even when a warm tavern bed is available.
2 I strictly adhere to traditional ancient desert laws and customs, even when they clash violently with local city ordinances.
3 Because I am used to scarce resources, I have a habit of quietly hoarding extra rations and water, sometimes to the annoyance of my companions.
