“Hold the line, and the world behind you survives.”
Introduction
You were raised beneath the cold ridges and iron-gray walls of the Helbrann Highlands, where every citizen learns that survival is not an individual achievement. It is a formation. As a Pike Legionary, you trained in the ancient martial discipline of the Helbranni: pike walls, shield-lines, horn commands, alpine maneuvers, pass defense, and the unglamorous heroism of standing still when everything monstrous, mounted, or desperate crashes toward you.
Among the Helbranni, the pike is more than a weapon. It is civic memory in wood and steel. Every able adult receives some measure of formation training, and those who become true Pike Legionaries carry that discipline into war, mercenary service, caravan defense, monster hunts, and the defense of the Stonepact itself. The Background Template calls for an introductory paragraph, detailed description, features, bonuses, feats, ability bonuses, background-specific table, equipment, characteristics, contacts, and closing quote, which this entry follows.
Description
You trained in the yards of a Helbranni canton, where snow gathered between shield racks and drillmasters treated poor footwork as a moral failing. From childhood, you learned to brace a pike against cavalry, beasts, charging infantry, and things with too many teeth to be tactically polite. You learned how to lock shields, rotate tired fighters out of the line, count horn signals through wind, and trust the person to your left before you trusted your own fear.
The life of a Pike Legionary is not built on glory. It is built on repetition. Step. Brace. Breathe. Thrust. Recover. Hold. In Helbranni culture, a single warrior may be brave, but a disciplined line is civilization made visible. Pike Legionaries defend roads, passes, bridges, winter granaries, clan halls, and retreating civilians. They serve in canton militias, elite formations, Covenant Contract companies, and foreign wars where Helbranni reliability is worth more than silver.
Many Pike Legionaries eventually leave the highlands under contract, oath, exile, or necessity. Some serve as mercenaries in distant lands. Others become bodyguards, caravan defenders, monster hunters, military trainers, or adventurers bound to protect companions as if they were a shield-line in miniature. They may seem stern, practical, and unimpressed by spectacle, but their loyalty runs deep once earned. A Pike Legionary measures friendship by who remains standing when the formation starts to break.
The Helbranni original material describes their pike formations as legendary across Aetheris, tied to shield-walls, alpine discipline, canton defense, and a society where even common civilians train in formation warfare.

Using the Pike Legionary Background
This background is ideal for players who want a character shaped by military discipline, civic duty, survival culture, and the Helbranni tradition of collective strength. It works especially well in campaigns involving warfare, political contracts, defensive missions, monster incursions, mountain travel, or adventuring parties that need someone willing to become the wall when things go beautifully, catastrophically wrong.
A Pike Legionary is not just “a soldier.” They are someone trained to believe that courage is most meaningful when coordinated, that loyalty is proven under pressure, and that the person beside you matters as much as the weapon in your hands.
“A lone spear is a weapon.

| 12 | You left the highlands after swearing to protect someone who could not survive the road alone. |
Formation Keeper
You know how to create order in chaos. When danger rises, your voice, stance, and battlefield instincts help nearby allies find their place.
When you and at least one willing ally are within 5 feet of each other and neither of you is Incapacitated, you can use a Bonus Action to call a defensive cadence. Until the start of your next turn, you and one adjacent ally gain a +1 bonus to Strength or Dexterity saving throws made to resist being moved, knocked Prone, shoved, pulled, or knocked off balance.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, regaining all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.
Outside combat, your training lets you quickly organize frightened civilians, guards, or travelers into a basic defensive posture. Given 1 minute and willing participants, you can arrange a small group into a protective formation, barricade watch, escort column, or emergency retreat order. This does not make untrained people skilled fighters, but it can prevent panic and improve survival during ambushes, evacuations, and disasters.
Line-Brother, Line-Sister, Line-Kin
Helbranni military service creates bonds that travel farther than roads. In settlements familiar with Helbranni mercenaries, canton militias, or Covenant Contract companies, you can usually find someone who recognizes your drill marks, pike scars, formation calls, or oath-ring.
Such contacts may offer modest aid, including:
- A place to sleep in a barracks, guildhall, caravan post, or veteran’s room
- Local military rumors
- Information about mercenary contracts
- Directions to armorers, weaponsmiths, or quartermasters
- Introductions to guards, veterans, or drillmasters
- Basic repairs for armor, shields, pikes, or boots
This assistance is not blind loyalty. Helbranni and their allies respect service, but they judge conduct. If you dishonor a contract, abandon a sworn companion, or misuse their trust, these contacts may close ranks against you with chilly efficiency.

Contacts
As a Pike Legionary, you may have connections among Helbranni canton militias, Covenant Contract companies, veteran halls, Stormpike Brotherhood drillmasters, Stonegate oath-witnesses, quartermasters, caravan guards, roadwardens, armorers, and foreign officers who have hired Helbranni formations. You may also know Blackstone Dwarven shield engineers, Veltrionian defensive planners, Northmen veterans, or Kaelrathi cold-weather fighters who have stood alongside Helbranni troops in harsh campaigns.
These contacts are practical rather than sentimental. They may offer information, repairs, contract leads, battlefield rumors, or a place near the fire, but they expect you to keep your word and carry your share of the weight. A Pike Legionary with a reputation for reliability can find allies across Aetheris. A Pike Legionary known for oathbreaking will find doors shut with the quiet finality of a mountain tomb.
