Death was not the end of your story.
Either upon your birth, or when your life came to its inevitable close, another will reached out towards you. Whether it was an ancient lich, a powerful necromancer, or some other immortal master of undeath, something chose to return you to the world - not as a mindless servant, but as a vessel worthy of a second existence.
The magic that restored you did not simply reanimate your body. It bound your soul to a vessel, an object that anchors your existence to the mortal world. A weathered lantern, a rusted ring, a coffin, or even some other personal relic now carries a fragment of your soul. While your body walks the world, your true existence is forever tied to that object, and it is in constant need of nourishment.
Your patron may still watch over you. They may expect service, seek to mold you into an heir, or perhaps have long since perished, leaving you to discover your own purpose. Whatever the truth, you are no ordinary existence, especially amongst the realms.

Your soul has been forever altered by undeath, and the mindless dead recognize one of their own.
You may communicate simple ideas, emotions, and intentions with non-sentient undead creatures, such as zombies, skeletons, crawling claws, and similar creatures lacking language or independent thought. While this communication cannot compel obedience or override another creature's control, such undead instinctively understand your intent and may respond through gestures, sounds, or similarly simple expressions. At the DM's discretion, unattended mindless undead are generally indifferent toward you unless given reason otherwise, recognizing you as something neither wholly living nor truly dead.
However, no soul returns from death freely. Every risen is forever bound to an immortal being that has conquered death - a lich, vampire lord, necromancer, grave spirit, or another eternal master of undeath. Whether they are your creator, your patron, your jailer, your greatest ally, or your inevitable enemy is yours to determine, but the bond cannot easily be broken. Your Soul Engine serves as the anchor for this connection, and through it, your immortal counterpart can always find you should they choose to seek you. To choose this background, your character must come from a DMs Realm, and have a connection to an aforementioned figure established within their backstory. Your Soul Engine is permanently tied to said figure, unless you go on a special targeted quest to reclaim it into your own possession.
