You were once a favored child of the dark underbelly, an enforcer for the local branch of a ruthless criminal empire like the Zhentarim. Dressed in fine clothes and armed with a charming smile, you handled the syndicate's problems without breaking a sweat. Life was dangerous but comfortable, until a bitter rivalry with a fellow lieutenant over power and loyalty shattered your gilded cage. When the inevitable betrayal came, you barely survived, choosing to plunge into the icy waters of a roaring river or disappear into the labyrinthine alleys of Waterdeep rather than be a pawn in their endless wars. To the syndicate, you are a ghost, a name crossed off a ledger in dried blood.

Now, you are a drifter living on borrowed time and empty pockets. You have traded your tailored silks for a traveler's cloak, scraping by as an independent contractor. You often rely on hustling and tracking bounties just to buy your next meal. You hide your lethal training behind a mask of lazy indifference, wandering from town to town and actively avoiding the major trade hubs where old associates might recognize your face or fighting stance. Though you claim to have left the past behind, you sleep lightly, knowing that some debts cannot be erased by simply faking your own death.

Because you were once highly ranked within a criminal organization, you know exactly how the underworld operates. You can easily find safe houses, black markets, and fences in any major city, and you know the subtle signs to identify local gang members. However, relying on this network is a double-edged sword; if you use your real name, flaunt your wealth, or showcase your signature fighting stance while dealing with the criminal element, there is a high chance your former compatriots will hear whispers that you survived.
