The world never expected much from you, least of all your humble home. Your ordinary life of mucking the stalls or mending the fences or hauling the water or anything as such was only ever headed for an ordinary end. Then, all of that changed one day. Something happened that was anything but ordinary: a disaster, a monster, an agent of some distant tyrant who thought of your little backwater as too weak to fight back. Most people would've fled. You didn't.
It probably shouldn't have worked. You had no training, no army, nothing but the tools of your trade and a conviction that this could not stand. But against all odds, you fought back. And you won. And the stories and rumours and tavern songs have spread far and wide enough to outgrow you, picking up a detail you don't remember here and shedding a detail you do recall there.
Now you carry a reputation you didn't quite ask for and struggle to live up to on your worst days. Somewhere between the person you were before and the tales people tell now, a fork in the road has branched. Will you become what they think you are? Or will you prove to them that all you ever were was a lucky fool who happened to be in the right place at the right time?

You previously pursued a simple profession among the peasantry, perhaps as a farmer, miner, servant, shepherd, woodcutter, or gravedigger. But something happened that set you on a different path and marked you for greater things. Choose or randomly determine a defining event that marked you as a hero of the people.
| d10 | Defining Event |
|---|---|
| 1 | You stood your ground against a tyrant's agents while everyone else ran. Once per Long Rest, when you fail a saving throw against being Frightened or Charmed, you can choose to succeed instead. |
| 2 | You pulled people from a disaster others had given up on. Once per Long Rest, you can stabilize a dying creature with a touch, no check required, and it regains 1 hit point. |
| 3 | You stood alone against something monstrous and lived. Once per Long Rest, when you take damage from a single attack equal to half your hit point maximum or more, you can use your Reaction to halve that damage. |
| 4 | You stole from someone powerful to give to those who needed more. When you take something you intend to immediately give away, no one can catch you in the act unless they were already specifically watching you at that exact moment — a passive Perception check isn't enough. |
| 5 | You led ordinary people into a fight they shouldn't have survived. Once per Long Rest, you can spend 1 minute steadying up to six willing creatures; each gains temporary hit points equal to your proficiency bonus. |
| 6 | You broke into a place of power alone and walked out with what you came for. After spending at least a day in a settlement, you know of one hidden route in or out of it (a smuggler's tunnel, an unguarded door, a sympathetic gatekeeper) that most people don't. |
| 7 | Attackers came for you or your home, and the only weapons in reach were the tools of your trade. Any improvised weapon you wield that could plausibly be a farm or work tool deals 1d6 damage instead of 1d4. |
| 8 | You refused a direct order and were punished publicly for it and the people who watched never forgot. Your defiance is public knowledge. In places sympathetic to your cause, people are quicker to trust and shelter you; in places loyal to the power you defied, you're more likely to be recognized and reported. This cuts both ways, your DM decides which applies where. |
| 9 | Something not quite mortal marked you as a blessing, a warning or a sign of the truth about where you came from. You always know which way is true north, and you can sense the presence (but not the exact location) of celestials, fey, or fiends within 30 feet of you. |
| 10 | You served as a scout or vanguard in someone else's war, and learned to read a battlefield before anyone told you to. As a Bonus Action, you can determine whether a group of hostile creatures within 60 feet has an identifiable leader, and if so, which one it is. |
Common folk look out for their own and you're one of them no matter how far your name has traveled. You can find shelter, food, and a place to lie low among commoners — farmhands, laborers, servants, and the rural poor — as long as you haven't given them reason to see you as a danger. They'll lie to protect you from the law, from bounty hunters, or from anyone else asking after you. They won't fight for you, and they won't die for you, but they'll never be the ones who turn you in.

Suggested Characteristics
Folk heroes carry the weight of other people's expectations, whether they asked for them or not. Some grow into the story told about them. Others spend a lifetime still trying to recognize themselves underneath it. However the fame settled on you, the place and the people you came from remain part of who you are, for better or worse.

| 4 | I pick fights I could walk away from, because walking away doesn't make a good story. |
| 5 | I remember every person who looked away when I needed help better than the ones who helped. |
