“People guard their vaults more carefully than their pride, but pride usually knows where the key is hidden.”
— Isolde Veyr, Mistress of the Gilded Veil
Introduction
Veiled Cabaret Agents are performers, spies, courtesans, informants, occult entertainers, and social infiltrators trained to gather secrets through charm, music, dance, staged vulnerability, beauty, humor, and carefully managed intimacy.
They are not merely singers who overhear useful conversations or attractive companions who happen to notice too much. A trained Agent studies appetite, insecurity, pride, loneliness, fear, jealousy, resentment, and desire. They understand how attention changes behavior and how people reveal themselves when they believe they are admired, forgiven, envied, feared, or in control.
Characters with this background are skilled at entering dangerous social spaces without appearing threatening. They thrive in salons, taverns, noble courts, military camps, black-market enclaves, subterranean settlements, caravan houses, private clubs, and occult gatherings where secrets move more freely than coin.
Description
The veiled cabarets of Aetheris are far more than houses of entertainment. Some are fashionable salons where nobles conduct business beneath music and candlelight. Others are hidden theaters used by smugglers, exiles, spies, revolutionaries, mercenaries, or occult societies. A few are traveling companies whose performers cross borders more easily than diplomats and hear more truth than official ambassadors.
Within these establishments, entertainment creates permission. A song allows someone to mourn publicly without admitting weakness. A dance lets rivals study one another without drawing weapons. A private performance gives the lonely an excuse to speak. A flirtation gives the proud permission to boast. Laughter lowers defenses that interrogation would only strengthen.
Veiled Cabaret Agents are taught to shape such moments.
Their education combines performance, observation, disguise, etiquette, coded communication, seduction, conversational manipulation, and threat assessment. Apprentices learn how to enter a room and identify its true center of power. They observe who receives attention, who resents being overlooked, who performs confidence, who fears scandal, and who watches while pretending not to listen.
They also learn restraint. Crude manipulation creates resentment. Obvious seduction invites suspicion. An Agent must know how much pressure a person can bear before they retreat, become dangerous, or recognize the game being played. The most skilled Agents often appear to be doing very little. They let silence linger, offer precisely measured praise, remember a minor detail, or ask the question another person has secretly been waiting to answer.
Runebrand Agents often approach performance with the same discipline their people apply to metal, stone, runes, and inherited craft. To them, attention is a material to be shaped. A voice can be tempered. A gesture can be measured. A persona can be assembled as carefully as a firearm or engraved seal.
Their costumes, songs, and stage identities are rarely improvised without purpose. Colors signal availability, danger, mourning, allegiance, or rank. Jewelry may conceal lockpicks, blades, coded messages, powders, or arcane focuses. A repeated melody may warn an ally. A dance step may indicate an exit. A seemingly affectionate touch may identify concealed armor, a hidden weapon, or the nervous tremor of a liar.
Veiled Cabaret Agents maintain complicated relationships with rulers, criminal organizations, military intelligence offices, noble houses, theater companies, temples, smugglers, and revolutionary cells. Some serve a formal network. Others sell information selectively or act according to personal loyalties. Many conceal the full extent of their training even from those who employ them.
An Agent may become an adventurer after a mission goes wrong, a patron is murdered, a secret proves too dangerous to sell, or a performance reveals the presence of an occult power. Some are sent to accompany expeditions because dangerous settlements cannot always be approached through force. Others travel to locate traffickers, cult recruiters, political conspirators, or stolen relics.
For a Veiled Cabaret Agent, every gathering is a stage, every audience contains a weakness, and every performance offers the possibility that someone will reveal more than they intended.

The Door Opens for a Smile
You know how to use charm, performance, flirtation, posture, silence, and carefully chosen words to gain access to conversations and social spaces that might otherwise remain closed.
When you spend at least 10 minutes observing a gathering in a tavern, salon, black-market enclave, military camp, noble household, caravan house, theater, private club, or subterranean settlement, you can usually identify several important social dynamics.
You may determine:
- Who most wants attention
- Who fears embarrassment or scandal
- Who responds strongly to praise
- Who is attempting to impress someone
- Who is pretending not to listen
- Who appears lonely, resentful, jealous, or insecure
- Who holds influence without formal authority
- Who is tolerated rather than respected
- Who is likely to respond to humor, sympathy, flirtation, or professional admiration
- Which person is safest to approach for an introduction
You can often use this knowledge to secure an introduction, join a public conversation, gain a place near an important table, or persuade someone to speak with you privately.
This feature does not compel anyone, replace an ability check, guarantee access to restricted areas, or cause a hostile creature to ignore obvious danger. It provides an informed opening rather than automatic success.
The Game Master may require an appropriate Charisma check when the stakes are high, the target is suspicious, or failure would carry serious consequences. Your feature gives you narrative authority to identify the right approach, but your execution still matters.
A person trained in counterintelligence, social manipulation, or court intrigue may recognize what you are doing. Repeatedly exploiting the same individual can also create suspicion or resentment.
Coded Performance
You know how to conceal simple messages within music, poetry, dance, stage patter, costume choices, and repeated gestures.
Before a performance or social gathering, you may establish up to three simple signals with willing creatures who understand your code.
Such signals might communicate:
- Follow me
- Leave immediately
- Someone is listening
- Delay them
- Prepare for violence
- The target is lying
- Watch the north exit
- I need privacy
- This person is dangerous
- Continue the deception
A signal must be brief and cannot communicate detailed plans, complex directions, or unexpected information for which no meaning was established.
Observers unfamiliar with your code usually interpret the signal as part of the performance. A creature actively watching for covert communication may notice that something has passed between you, though it may not understand the meaning.
Your code can also be embedded in written lyrics or performance notes. Anyone who knows the system can identify the hidden message, while others see only artistic notation.
Suggested Characteristics
Veiled Cabaret Agents cultivate charm and emotional control, but their masks can become difficult to remove. Many are playful, observant, guarded, and far more serious than their public personas suggest.

| 2 | I study my companions so constantly that they sometimes feel like targets rather than friends. |
| 3 | I enjoy control more than I am comfortable admitting. |
| 4 | I may continue a social game long after the useful information has been obtained. |
| 5 | I hide fear behind flirtation, wit, or theatrical confidence. |

Contacts
Your contacts may include performers, musicians, dancers, courtesans, theater owners, tavern keepers, smugglers, servants, bodyguards, costume makers, informants, intelligence officers, occultists, and wealthy patrons.
These individuals can provide rumors, introductions, temporary lodging, performance opportunities, disguises, messages, or access to social spaces where outsiders are rarely welcomed. A tavern singer may know which merchant is lying about his route. A dresser may recognize the symbols worn by a secret society. A courtesan may hear political information weeks before it becomes public.
Your network is rarely governed by a single formal hierarchy. It is maintained through favors, reputation, affection, rivalry, and shared danger. Some contacts are loyal friends. Others are transactional. A few may still believe you are the persona through which you first met them.
Mentors within the tradition may be demanding and unsentimental. They teach that an Agent must protect their own boundaries, recognize coercion, and never mistake being desired for being safe.
Spies and criminal organizations may value your abilities while distrusting your independence. Noble houses may seek to employ you discreetly. Religious authorities may condemn your methods publicly while requesting your assistance privately.
Slavers, traffickers, cult recruiters, blackmailers, and users of magical domination are natural enemies of the Veiled Cabaret tradition. Such individuals understand the power of desire but strip away consent, dignity, and freedom.
