Through both sides of the coin of luck, you have survived an unspeakable tragedy. Through your hardiness you have steeled yourself, and the remainder of your days have been spent traveling; possibly for justice, vengeance, new meaning, or just for a sense of closure. Though the event in question undoubtedly haunts you with trauma and regret, you have a reforged sense of strength and determination that fuels you in a way you did not know possible.

Skill Proficiencies: Living with the horrors of your past has honed your abilities. Choose two skills from Insight, Religion, Stealth, or Survival.
Tool Proficiencies: Due to your terrible loss, you have become apt at living wherever and however you need to. You are proficient in navigator’s tools.
Languages: You know one extra language: it can be a race that took you in, or the ones that ruined your life,
Equipment: You have gained the following in your travels:

  • A trinket to remember your life before the tragedy.
  • An item of whoever is responsible for your pain (uniform patch, symbol, holy sigil, etc.)
  • A crude map of the general area
  • A set of common clothes
  • A small knife

Feature: I’ve Seen Worse

You have advantage against all checks vs fear except for those directly related to your tragedy, for which you have disadvantage. You do not suffer disadvantage for strenuous circumstances (racing against time, cave crumbling in, watched ally get crushed by troll, etc.) except for those directly related to your tragedy. At the DM’s discretion, related events may trigger madness in the form of PTSD (refer to rules for madness in the Dungeon Master’s Guide).

Suggested Characteristics

A Survivor can come from many paths. Some are violent, some are devastating, some are cowardly. Depending on the public nature of the tragedy, people may treat you with pity, fear, or disgust. How one approaches these hurdles determines how they survive.
