You were once part of a terrifying, unified psionic collective, your every thought directed by the overwhelming will of an Elder Brain. Then, the link shattered. Whether your community was annihilated, a magical anomaly spiked your individuality, or you actively fought to tear your consciousness away, you are now completely alone in your own head. You must navigate a strange, emotional, and terrified surface world while hunting for a new purpose and constantly looking over your shoulder for the psychic executioners sent to purge you.
- Ability Scores: You gain a +2 bonus to one ability score and a +1 bonus to a different one, or a +1 bonus to three different scores. Your choices should be made from Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma, or Dexterity.
- Feat: You gain the Mental Anchor Origin Feat, forged from your intense struggle to protect your newly liberated mind from the elder brain's reach.
- Skill Proficiencies: You gain proficiency in Insight and Stealth, allowing you to interpret unfamiliar mortal emotions while moving unseen through their cities.
- Tool Proficiencies: You gain proficiency with the Disguise Kit, an absolute necessity for concealing your tentacles and blending into humanoid societies.
- Languages: You know Common and Deep Speech, the ancient, twisting language of the Underdark and alien aberrations.
- Equipment: You start with a Disguise Kit, a hooded cloak, a set of common clothes, a dagger, and a pouch containing 15 gp.
As a newly independent entity experiencing individuality for the first time, you may have developed a unique quirk or perspective on the world around you.
Your sudden disconnection from the collective hive mind forced you to forge an unbreakable psychic shield to protect your newly found individuality. You have proficiency in your choice of Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma saving throws. Advantage against being Charmed or Frightened, and your mind cannot be read against your will.
Suggested Characteristics
Exiled mind flayers are intensely logical but often struggle with the messy, unpredictable nature of mortal emotions and personal free will. They may view surface customs with detached scientific curiosity or deep anxiety.
