Magical Aristocracy/Squib Image

You were born in 1675,  during the reign of Charles II.

You come from a long line of famous and powerful sorcerers and wizards descended from William the Conqueror's court wizard, and your family have been titled aristocracy, and magical movers and shakers in the empire ever since.  Your parents were both wizards of great renown- Your mother a court sorceress, and your father a dashing commander of Charles II's war wizards.  both were instrumental in the restoration of the monarchy, and your family titles and lands were restored by a grateful king.
However, the turbulent times took their toll.  As a family of mages, your family's religious tradition was ever suspect, but was always held second to their service to the crown.  But the trouble on the horizon manifested in several plots against the king by protestant agitators and unrepentant roundheads.
On April 1st  1683, The king and his son, James were to make a journey to Newmarket to see the horse races there.  Your parents divined that an assassination attempt was likely, and so they set out ahead of the king's party to foil it.  What followed was Later known as "The Rye House Plot",  a running battle with summoned demons and several mages that ended with the plot foiled, Newmarket in flames,  and your parents dead.   Word of the fire reached the king, and the trip was cancelled, but a few in the court knew what had actually happened, and informed the king.  You were an only child, and sole heir at the tender age of 8.  The King took a personal interest in your well-being, appointed a trustworthy guardian, and recognized you as the title holder.
During the reign of James II,  The court was dominated by catholic favorites,  but your youth served to protect you from the religious intrigues of the day.  After all, your parents had saved James as well as his father.  Secure in your estate, with sympathetic adults at court and two kings  as "uncles", you were fairly well isolated from the political winds that blew so many other noble families away when James was ousted and William and Mary assumed the thrones.
You were actually called to Parliament in 1689 For the "Convention Parliament", and while your only role was to formally give your proxy to your guardian,  It was still an exciting experience for a 14-year old, and London was certainly an eye-opener.  It was here that you were first introduced to your parents' former colleagues and fellow mages.  Some of them had visited from time to time, but all offers of apprenticeship or tutoring were gratefully declined by your guardian, who was evidently under orders to keep you from becoming embroiled in controversy.  Still, you were able to convince the magical community that you had the right stuff, and made a small reputation for yourself as a precocious chip off the old block with your expansive command of theory, as well as your manners and charm.  After the coronation, and being presented to the king and queen to make your oath of fealty, you returned to your estate, leaving the court with the impression that you were well on your way to achieving the great things that all expected from one of your background.
You know just about everything there is to know about magic, and as you grew older, you used your knowledge and skill to become a consulting forensic sorcerer for the crown.  You've been quite successful, garnering accolades across europe, including Bavarian and Swiss (Bern) knighthoods.  As an investigator you have made a name for yourself as a consultant.  but after years of success, you are ready to go out and to do battle with the forces of evil.

So far, no one has suspected a thing.
The tragic truth is that you were born without so much as an Iota of magical ability.  No sorcerous powers,  no feel for Wizardry, or anything else.  You can't so much as light a candle under your own power.  This disability sorely disappointed your parents, and they kept it a deeply held secret, hoping to add more talented children to carry the family reputation as world-shakers.  Sadly, they died before they could present you with more talented siblings, or repair the damage their shame had done you.
An 8 year old who believes that he has disgraced his dead parents, and who is surrounded by powerful people (kings, no less) who "expect great things from you, lad!" is in a particularly vulnerable position, emotionally.  And the trustworthy guardian provided by the king turned out to be, well, Odd.  Almost as if he were two different people.  one, an affable uncle type, the other a harsh taskmaster bent on filling your head with as much magical lore as it would hold,  Giving you odd potions and injections to increase your memory and mental faculties. Sometimes Screaming in his sleep as if all the demons of hell were torturing him.
and then, the whispers began.  filling your mind with promises of power, and secrets man was not meant to know.  Then the voice finally revealed itself to you in all it's horrific, eldritch, splendor.  A vision of a sanity-blasting entity made entirely of infinitely long tentacles shining in colors not meant for human eyes.
your young mind snapped under the strain, and you agreed to do anything, anything at all if only it would sear the sight from your memory.

Since then, you have been a servant of A Great old one;  An elder god from beyond space and time.  It has a name, but you don't dare speak it.  It has granted you the magical powers you craved, but at a terrible price.
Since that night, you have been gripped with a fervent desire to acquire sorcerous power on your own.  To that end, you have been killing magical creatures and dissecting them, paying resurrectionists to deliver you recently dead magic practitioners and creatures like elves and dwarves that have an innate magical nature so you could treat them likewise.
IN a secret laboratory on your estate,  you have an extensive collection of preserved organs, skeletons, and whole preserved corpses, as well as a large collection of "parts" for use in various magical projects and experiments.  You seek to steal sorcery from other creatures and make it your own.
In the meantime, you serve your patron out of fear, dreading each gift it gives you, even as you use it to pretend to be a conventional sorcerer.
