You have spent a significant portion of your life looking at the world through the bottom of a glass. Whether you are a disgraced detective, a veteran trying to quiet the ghosts of the past, or a brilliant artisan who simply finds the sober world too boring to tolerate, you have mastered the art of functioning under the influence. To the uninitiated, you appear to be a stumbling disaster. But when the chips are down, your clouded mind finds a strange, unpredictable clarity, and your swaying stagger makes you surprisingly hard to hit.

Roleplay: Functional Quirks
To really sell the "high-functioning" part of the background, roll a d6 or choose how your character's inebriation actually helps them:
| d6 | Functional Quirk |
| 1 | The Hemingway: I can only write, read, or decipher complex magic when I am at least three drinks deep. |
| 2 | Liquid Courage: I am terrified of monsters, but when I'm drunk, I become aggressively overconfident and fearless. |
| 3 | The Sway: I never walk in a straight line, which makes my footwork in combat completely unpredictable to trained fighters. |
| 4 | Barroom Diplomat: I am abrasive and rude when sober, but wildly charismatic and empathetic when I have a buzz. |
| 5 | Numb: I drink to dull physical pain. I often don't realize I've been badly wounded until the fight is over. |
| 6 | The Functioning Blackout: I occasionally wake up from a bender having perfectly completed a complex task or solved a puzzle with no memory of doing it. |
