Not all jobs are something you’re born to do. Sometimes a job is just a job. Nothing wrong with that. Ship City is full of wants and needs, services that must be fulfilled. People sometimes sneer at your kind of work, thinking it is beneath them. But not you, you took pleasure in helping others. In making Ship City work from day to day. Sometimes, greatness lies in the mundane.
GUILD CLERK
Let’s be honest – you hated your job. Mostly because you weren’t very good at it. You had only gotten it because your mother had a contact in the Guild. Now you were sorting mail, taking notes, and handling various tasks for an arrogant Guild master who only occasionally knew your name. The job wasn’t without benefits, though. You got to… – No, it was mostly useless. Your dream was to explore the universe. You drew star maps on your breaks, waiting for the chance to someday make it onto an exploring vessel.
STAIR PEDDLER
You worked the steep stairs of the Chasm every morning, day and night. Sometimes you even slept there, rolled up in a blanket with the magnificent view of the Chasm’s glittering lights all around you. You sold what you could, and eventually got rather good at it. But most of all you observed the people around you, both good and bad.
ICE TRADER
You know a thing or two about ice. About its structure, composition and weight. You know its importance. After all, you traded it for a long time. Making sure that freighter captains got their cargo to the Bay in time, selling short ice bonds to Guilds and merchants alike. You learned that whoever controls the flow of ice, controls the people.
ALLEY COOK
You could make a stew from almost anything, cook fungi to perfection, straight from the cave walls, and grill tasty skewers of those pesky prana-critters. Sure you had to move your small stall every other week when the Zapti got tired of you, and the pay was not very good. But with what you had, you did good. And so did your customers.
CORIOLITE SERVANT
You have seen your fair share of pompous ceremonies, meticulous rituals and elaborate clothing, you sure have. Still, work as a servant to a Coriolite noble had its perks. You lived in a veritable palace in the gloom of the Inner Sanctum, were allowed to feast on the leftovers of your master’s expensive dinners and learned a lot about the ways of the Old Horizon.
ARTIFACT DEALER
You were always interested in things. Beautiful handmade objects instill a sense of calm in your soul. So you learned all you could about them and soon you knew more than your local shard peddler. The shelves of your small shop saw artifacts from all over the Charted Sphere, each with its own story. You have long since sold them off, but you still remember them. Sometimes you dream about them.
