The Lost Horizon is full of unknowns, mysteries waiting to be unraveled – and you always had a knack for figuring things out. Whether buried in a paper book or a library base, your thirst for knowledge drove you. You needed to understand: what had brought civilization to Jumuah? How did the Slipstream truly work? Why were there so many ruins? And what else lay hidden out there in the Great Dark, or deep within the caverns of Ship City? Each discovery led you to write it down, then on to the next conundrum, always seeking answers.
GUILD ARCHIVIST
Why risk the dangers and inconveniences of traveling the Lost Horizon when a trove of knowledge lay hidden right beneath your feet? You realized early on that the Guilds knew more than they let on. All that information, all that data and bureaucracy – it had to be stored somewhere, and properly managed. Who better than you to oversee it? Archiving, cataloging, and organizing became your mission, and you carried it out with excellence.
ALGEBRAIST APPRENTICE
Since you were little you have always known there is something more to the Horizon. Something behind it all. When you studied the old art of al-jabr you discovered the threads that keep the universe together. You poured over old tomes, scribbled calculus on every surface you had within reach and, in the end, became an Algebraist. When you donned the traditional skull cap, you became someone of importance. Your work meant something. It still does.
SLIPSTREAM CARTOGRAPHER
As a kid you created maps of your neighborhood's alleys and arranged treasure hunts for your friends. Your father said your scribblings were genius (they were not) and paid Old Man Fourad to teach you the ancient art of mapmaking. He was a tedious blowhard but his maps from The Old Horizon sent your mind spinning. You looked to the stars and set your mind to reach those distant and uncharted territories.
DIASPORA HISTORIAN
Sure the Old Horizon is interesting in its way, but the real underpinning of modern society is the Diaspora itself. People would be amazed how much can be traced to certain individuals among the original Diaspora fleet crew. You wrote extensively on the subject and even got published in some minor journals. Still, so much remains to be discovered. Maybe someday you will return to your subject.
CAVE BOTANIST
Flowers and plants have always perplexed you. The power of a seed to become a tree, the power of a fungus to spread its mycelium net over miles of caves and the uncanny power of the Blight to subvert it all. Working in the Cave Gardens as a kid, you learned the basics of horticulture and hydroponics. Traveling afar to other systems exposed you to the deeper universe of botany and the Blight.
BUILDER ARCHAEOLOGIST
There is nothing more important than understanding the Builders' monuments. Reading in pamphlet news about far away expeditions, trawling the open libraries of Ship City for all texts about the new archaeology of the Builders. Finally being allowed to examine shards under the tutelage of master archaeologist Sunna, you knew. You had to see the ruins with your own eyes.
