When the war ended, it left plenty of folks who knew nothing but bloodshed, grit, and how to take a punch. There weren’t many peaceful jobs for those sorts of skills, but you found work that felt close enough to the old life. Pubs, fighting pits, mining towns—wherever a crowd of burly drunks gathers, there’s a chance to knock a few teeth loose for gold. You’ve gotten pretty good at it, too. Good enough that your mug’s been plastered across wanted posters and fight bills from one town to the next. Folks know your name, or at least your face, and there’s always someone willing to bet on whether you’ll make it through another round. But winning has never been enough to keep you out of the ring. Maybe you’re fighting for something you can’t afford to lose. Maybe you’re running from something you can’t outrun. Whatever the reason, when the crowd starts hollering and the gold hits the table, you keep stepping between the ropes. One more fight. One more payday. One more chance to settle whatever’s eating at you.
