Executioner — Warden of the Final Tide
Custom Background for Vaelen Thorne
“I once believed death was the final judgment. Now I know it is simply the last duty owed to the living.”
Vaelen Thorne once served as an executioner of the Llana’Shi Empire, entrusted with carrying out the empire’s most solemn judgments. He was trained to deliver death without cruelty, to remain steadfast before suffering, and to ensure that every condemned soul received a dignified passage into the next existence.
Yet Vaelen never stood alone at the executioner’s block.
Within him dwelled Vhorne Thorne, his twin brother, whose soul had been bound to Vaelen through an ancient Laneshi rite. Known as the Silent Undertow, Vhorne became his conscience, his closest companion, and the voice that questioned the justice of the sentences Vaelen carried out.
For years, Vaelen obeyed his oath. He maintained his weapons, prepared the condemned, recorded their names, and offered final prayers before each execution. Though his hands delivered death, he never allowed himself to forget the humanity of those who stood before him.
His loyalty ended when he was ordered to execute an innocent Laneshi whose bound twin soul had begun to manifest independently. Recognizing a reflection of his own existence, Vaelen refused the sentence. He lowered his weapon, defied imperial authority, and abandoned the life he had sworn to uphold.
Stripped of his position and driven into exile, Vaelen wandered the shores and wilderness of Etharis, burdened by the lives he had taken and determined never again to mistake obedience for justice.
His travels eventually led him to the teachings of the Circle of Entropy. There, he discovered that death was neither punishment nor evil, but an essential part of the natural cycle. Decay nourished renewal, endings made beginnings possible, and no mortal authority possessed the right to imprison a soul beyond its rightful passage.
Vaelen exchanged the executioner’s blade for an ironwood staff and a shield bearing the Sigil of the Twins. He became a Warden of the Final Tide, protecting the living while ensuring that the dead were allowed to rest.
His resilience is reflected in his Deathbound nature. Twice touched by the boundary between life and death, Vaelen has endured wounds that should have ended him. Whether through his determination or the enduring presence of Vhorne, the final tide has not yet claimed him.
Today, Vaelen carries a weathered ledger containing the names of those he executed and those he has since saved. He travels not to escape his past, but to ensure that its lessons are never forgotten.
He remains an executioner in discipline, but no longer in allegiance. His judgment belongs to his conscience, his duty to the natural order, and his loyalty to the brother who has never left his side.
“The tide takes all things in time. But none shall be taken before their hour.”
