In the great cities of the Dwendalian Empire, people lower their voices when they speak of the scourgers. Most believe they are a story told to frighten children and agitators: shadows who come in the night for anyone who speaks against King Dwendal, and who leave nothing behind but ash and silence. The truth was worse. The scourgers were the Volstrucker, the secret arcane enforcers of the Cerberus Assembly, and they answered to one man: Master Trent Ikithon, Archmage of Civic Influence.
You were one of them. Trent found you among the gifted students of the Soltryce Academy in Rexxentrum, as he found all his agents, and he chose you because something had already broken you. In his tower on the grounds of the Vergesson Sanatorium, his "awakening" finished the work: memories rewritten, loyalties burned away and rebuilt, until you were a weapon that never asked why. Crystals of refined residuum were set into your forearms to sharpen your magic, and black, maze-like glyphs were inked around them to mark you as a graduate of the order.
Then the order fell. Trent was arrested and sentenced to life in a dungeon beneath Rexxentrum, and the Cobalt Soul's investigation dragged the Volstrucker into the light. The Assembly would rather its secrets stayed buried, and some of those secrets walk around in people like you. Whatever you do now, you carry the order's training, its scars and its enemies with you.
Its feats take their name from the order's training, the awakening. This background also grants two feats that carry its choices on D&D Beyond: Volstrucker: Ability Scores (your ability score increases) and Volstrucker: Tragedy (the loss that set you on this path).
- Ability Scores: Intelligence, Dexterity, Constitution
- Feat: Volstrucker Awakening (see that feat)
- Skill Proficiencies: Deception and Stealth
- Tool Proficiencies: Poisoner's Kit
- Equipment: Common Clothes, a black hooded cloak, a Poisoner's Kit, and a pouch holding 10 GP
Happy people aren’t selected to join the Volstrucker. The Cerberus Assembly preys upon talented individuals who have been broken by tragedy—in some cases, tragedy that the Volstrucker has arranged for. A slightly broken mind is more easily reshaped and reeducated. Choose the tragedy that set you on this path, or roll on the Tragedies table. Record it by choosing the matching option of the Volstrucker: Tragedy feat, so it shows on your character sheet.
| d6 | Tragedy |
|---|---|
| 1 | Familicide. Through lies and manipulation, the order convinced you that your family were traitors, and you killed them with your own hands. Only later, if ever, did you learn the truth. |
| 2 | Amnesia. You have no memory of the life before the Academy. Something took it from you, perhaps a fever, a blow, or a spell, and the order was glad to fill the empty space with a past of its own design. |
| 3 | Capture. You were taken prisoner by the Kryn Dynasty and held for months, questioned and hurt in the dark. You came home hollow and hungry for someone to blame, and the Assembly gave you one. |
| 4 | Starvation. You grew up in the empire's leanest corners, knowing hunger as a constant companion. The order offered you food, warmth and purpose, and asked only for everything else. |
| 5 | Disfigurement. An accident, a fire, or a deliberate cruelty left you scarred in a way people could not look past. In the order, no one needed to see your face, only the work you did. |
| 6 | Vicissitude. Your family once had wealth, a name and a future, and lost them all in a single turn of fortune. The order promised you a way to matter again, and you believed it. |
The Volstrucker kept in touch across any distance through a network of enchanted letters. You know its secret. Write a letter in the same arcane ink a wizard uses to scribe spells, at a cost of 10 GP per page, address it to a member of the order, and cast it into a fire. The page burns to cinders and reforms, whole and unburned, on the person of the agent you named.
The network works both ways. Anyone who holds the ink and knows your old agent name can reach you the same way, and a reply comes only if someone on the other end chooses to send one. Since the order was exposed, every letter is a gamble: it might find a former comrade being hunted, an investigator writing with a captured agent's ink, or someone who would much rather you stayed lost.
Homebrew expansion of the Volstrucker Agent background from Explorer's Guide to Wildemount, rebuilt in the 2024 format. Wizards only: its feat, Volstrucker Awakening, requires the Wizard class.
Suggested Characteristics
Agents of the Volstrucker are groomed to follow orders without question and to kill without mercy. The trauma that brings one into the order can fester even more strongly against the darkness of a Volstrucker agent’s assignments. Since the order was exposed, its former agents live with what was done to them and what they did, and with the people who know their faces.
