You have spent your life in the service of an order devoted to one goal. You act as an intermediary between the realm of the dead and the mortal world, performing surgery and offering medical care in order to save lives. You are not necessarily a cleric—performing surgery and first aid is not the same thing as channeling divine power to heal.
If you want, choose a god, a pantheon of gods, or some other quasi-divine being, and work with your DM to detail the nature of your medical training and if the church is connected to the order of healers you learned from. The Gods of the Multiverse section contains a sample pantheon, from the Forgotten Realms setting. Choosing a god or pantheon is not necessary. Were you a nurse in a hospital, raised from childhood to assist the brothers in the care of other's hurts? Or were you a doctor who suddenly experienced a call to serve in a different way? Perhaps you were the leader of a small clinic outside of any established structure.
- Skill Proficiencies: Insight, Medicine
- Tool Proficiencies: Due to your extensive training you have proficiency with the healer's kit.
- Languages: Two of your choice
- Equipment: The symbol of your order (a gift to you when you successfully completed your training and took the oath of healers), a medical book, 2 healing potions, surgical garments, a healer's kit, a set of common clothes with an armband bearing the universal symbol of healers on the battlefield, a red cross on a white background, and a pouch containing 25 gp
As an healer, you command the respect of those around you, and you can expect to have people who need healing to approach you whenever you enter a place. When you take time to heal and treat the sick or injured you gain 1d4+2 sp in small towns and 1d4+3 gp in large towns and cities. You also gain advantage on persuasion rolls in a town where you have been healing people.
Townsfolk are always more than happy to help a healer and will often offer to give you and your party lodging after you have healed people. The lodging will most likely be humble but safe. However, if you are near to a place of healing run by your order, you can expect lodging, free healing, and food from the members of your order. They will also sell healing potions at half the normal rate, but only to the member of their order. If you have ties to a god or pantheon, followers of these deities will aid you in the same way as your order.
Suggested Characteristics
Healers are shaped by their experience in hospitals and battlefields. Their study of the body and history of their profession and their relationships to hospitals, temples, or other orders of healers affect their mannerisms and ideals. Their flaws might be some hidden hypocrisy or dangerous idea, or an ideal or bond taken to an extreme.
