Eons ago, a nameless race of humanoids threw off the yoke of their illithid masters. Taking for themselves the name of their leader, the Gith were then split on what kind of society to build in the aftermath. One group, under Gith's adviser Vlaakith, established a timeless outpost in the Astral Plane, where they could live free of aging and the other needs of the flesh. From there, they began raiding the worlds of the material plane. They had defeated the mind flayers, after all, so was it not their right to raid, loot, and pillage as they saw fit? But even the Githyanki are still mortal, and so must tend to the next generation.
You were born in an outpost on the Material Plane, hidden far away from civilization, where you and your fellows could mature, something which could not happen in the Astral Plane. Your rotating staff of instructors taught you complete obedience for the Revered Queen, how the other inhabitants of this world were inferior, and of the great city of Tu'narath where you too may live in glory alongside your people. You trained rigorously for the day when you would slay an illithid and prove your worth to your people.
And then, for some reason, it didn't work out quite like that. Perhaps you began to question the blind devotion to Vlaakith that your peers swallowed without question. Perhaps you were separated from your fellow Githyanki, and have had to fend for yourself in this strange world. Perhaps you wander this world alone willingly, either to learn about illithid activity or to serve Vlaakith in your own way. Perhaps the thought of facing an illithid was so terrifying that you ran from it, bringing shame upon yourself. Or, worst of all, perhaps you began to wonder if humans were the dirty animals you have been taught they were. Either way, you wander the world not as part of a Githyanki warband, but as an adventurer. Your appearance is alien to most of the inhabitants, and those who do know what you are fear and despise you for the destruction wrought by Githyanki raiders and the indifferent collateral damage occasionally wrought by their Githzerai cousins.
- Skill Proficiencies: Arcana; in addition, pick one between Athletics and Acrobatics
- Tool Proficiencies: Herbalist Kit or Healer's Kit
- Languages: One of your choice
- Equipment: A pouch containing 10 gold pieces, a silver coin that reminds you of the weapons used by your people, a set of common clothes with some basic Githyanki decoration, and a book containing writing in the Gith language (decide what kind of writing with your DM)
In preparation for hunting down the ancient enemies of your people, you have learned a great deal about the psionic abilities that they, and to a lesser extent you, possess. You have an easier time recalling information about creatures who use psionic abilities, and can recognize psionic energy when it clearly manifests while you can see/hear it.
Suggested Characteristics
Consider your relation to your fellow Githyanki. Are you on good terms with them? How do you feel about the xenophobia and militarism of your people? How are you adjusting to being with a group of adventurers? How do you feel being amongst these humans?
