You were once a hero, whether to a small town, large city, or across the land. But not everything has worked out for this hero. They may have failed a quest that haunts them to this day or made a mistake that cost someone their life. Regardless of the details, the word has spread of your failure and disgrace hangs over your head. Songs and tales of your bravery have now changed to ballads and comedies of your plight. You've grown accustomed to hiding your true identity, disguising yourself and lying to all you see. Should anyone discover your true identity, you can always rely on good old fashioned intimidation to put them in their place.

Wherever you go, people have heard of your disgrace. False identities and disguises are a regular part of your routine until you can find redemption.
Should anyone discover your true identity, you are sure to gain unwanted attention. Merchants might take advantage of your plight, increasing their prices. Drunken patrons of the inn you intend to stay the night in might start a fight or alert others of your presence. In some circumstances, an assassin or two may even come for you. I'd say it's better to just keep your head down for now, eh?
