Feywild Sojourner Image

You are a wanderer of faerie roads:  one who has experienced the wonders of the Feywild and survived its perils.

The Feywild, also sometimes called the Land of Faerie, is a place bright with magic.  Those who wander its enchanted roads discover miracles and wonders undreamt of in the mortal world.  In the Feywild, the laws of science, logic, and reason defer to the arts of magic, story, and rhyme.  Ordinary animals and objects converse as eloquently as any worldly mortal.  Enchanted forests wander across the landscape like herds of roving sheep.  Glorious castles perch on mountain spires that graze the starry heavens, and a bold traveler can board a vessel to a fey palace on the moon.  Fairies anoint the dew-drops on morning flowers, and in the evening, satyrs play their gentle pipes to lull the world to sleep.  In this place, wild unicorns gallop across meadows like a flight of shooting stars, and frolicsome nymphs lovelier than the dawn take mortals as partners.  In this place, a maiden enchanted to sleep for a thousand years can be awakened with true love's kiss.  Clever mortals can outwit mighty giants, trolls, and dragons, winning fantastic treasures.  In this land, magic is inherent in all things, and anyone can realize his or her heart's desire.

Yet for all its enchantment, the Feywild is perilous to the unwary.  The fickle fey place little value on the brief lives of mortals.  Fortunate visitors from the ordinary world deal with fey that are ambivalent toward them, rather than fey that toy with them for their amusement.  Aside from the capricious faerie courts, hags, tyrannical fomorian kings, and powerful archfey ruling over dark demesnes command foul goblins, ogres, werewolves, and other creatures that savor the taste of mortal flesh.  These villains can be as fundamentally evil as demon lords, and they possess powers of comparable might.  Mortals who attempt to survive in the Feywild by strength of arms alone are doomed to fall to creatures that wield magic far more cunning than any blade.  Those who adapt to the storybook logic of the Feywild and learn to live by their wits stand a far better chance of survival.  In order to survive this land of fraught beauties, you had to adapt to the ways of the fey.

Skill Proficiencies: Choose any two.
Languages: Choose Elvish, Gnomish, or Sylvan.
Equipment: A set of traveller's clothes, a pouch of cold-iron shavings, a lucky charm such as shamrock or a small stone with a whole in the center, and one fey-themed trinket of special significance (e.g. a feywine raisin, a dreamcatcher, a phoenix feather, a pinch of pixie dust, a piece of a fairy flag, a spring of wolfsbane, eladrin hair dyes, a gnomish mask, an elvish music box, or a grey cloak that keeps you perfectly dry in the rain)

Magical Event

Prior to becoming an adventurer, your path in life lead you to the Land of Faerie.  Choose a magical event that represents how you crossed over to the Feywild, or roll one on the Magical Events table.

d10 Magical Event
1 I lost my way in an enchanted wood and wound up in a dryad's grove.
2 I fell in with a troupe of Tuathans: an itinerant people, gifted in song and magic, who wander fairy roads in lively caravans.
3 At dawn, I crossed a ring of standing stones that whisked me to the Feywild.
4 I sought an elven city that lies where the border between worlds is thin.
5 I was kidnapped by a hag, who brought me to her cottage made of gingerbread.
6 I was shipwrecked on the island of a sea nymph.
7 I followed haunting music to the bottom of a pool and surfaced in a glade of satyrs, piping in the moonlight.
8 I danced with lovely nymphs all through a starry night, awakening in a foreign land.
9 I caught a pixie as a child, who lead me to her hollow.
10 I discovered an old tome on a dusty bookshelf that transported me to a realm of magic.

Feature: A Faerie Boon

During your foray into the Bright Realm, a fey creature granted you a favor.  Work with your DM to determine the exact nature of the boon.  Perhaps you carry a lucky coin that marks you as a friend to gnomes, or a conch bequeathed to you by Sebian the Sea Lord.  You may know the true name of a fairy, or bear a gold chrysanthemum plucked from the gardens of Titania.  A nymph's kiss may allow you to converse with nightingales, while a tuathan's compass may lead you to the nearest inn.  Perhaps a witch taught you her cookie recipe, or a fomorian lord "gifted" you an evil eye.

Suggested Characteristics

Those who visit the Feywild and return to the mortal world rarely, if ever, readjust to their normal lives.  The fey realm instills an adventurous, revivifying spirit.  Visions of a flight of pixies setting the evening stars alight, or the sight of the city of Astrazalian shimmering on the dusky sea leave impressions on a mortal heart that can never be erased.  After spending only a few days in the Feywild, a mortal might return to find that everyone he knew perished long ago.  Or he could spend years in Faerie, only to discover that no time at all has passed in the world.

d8 Personality Trait
1 Every day is the greatest day of my life.
2 I am given to bouts of reverie, often daydreaming about cloud castles, shining cities, and enchanted forests.
3 I do everything with enthusiasm, even the most mundane chores.
4 I love music and song. I supply a tune myself if no one else can.
5 I don't talk about the Feywild. My time there is like a beautiful dream I struggle to capture as it fades from memory.
6 Mortal food has lost all taste for me, compared to the exquisite delicacies of the faeries.
7 I put no trust in appearances. That old woman could be an enchantress, as easily as she could be a wicked hag.
8 I religiously abide by certain superstitions. Never cross a toadstool ring by moonlight!
d6 Ideal
1 Respect. I respect all life. In Faerie, a frog may be a prince, a troll may have a heart of gold, and the humblest folk are sometimes the most powerful. (Good)
2 Fate. Ours is a tale of many threads, woven into one tapestry. (Any)
3 Live and Let Live. Caution was my byword in the Feywild. Keep to yourself and live to see another day. (Neutral)
4 Nature. I put little stock in mortal rules and laws. Such things carry no weight in Faerie. (Chaotic)
5 Truth. I never break an oath. Woe to any in the Land of Faerie who reneges on their word. (Lawful)
6 Freedom. The capricious nature of the fey is the ultimate expression of freedom. (Chaotic)
d6 Bond
1 I keep my thoughts and discoveries in a journal. My journal is my only record of my time in Faerie, which I have forgotten.
2 I seek to reunite with those I left behind in Faerie or the mortal world.
3 I fled into the Feywild to escape a troubled past. I must someday confront it.
4 My heart was stolen by a faerie maiden.
5 I owe a debt to a fey creature, who assisted me when I was lost.
6 I have a lucky clover, rabbit's foot, or iron horseshoe. I must never part from it.
d6 Flaw
1 I have certain rituals that I must follow every day. I can never break them.
2 I am highly suspicious of a pretty face.
3 I have unrealistic, storybook expectations. In Faerie, a knight can slay a dragon and a rogue can fool a giant, so why not here?
4 People, causes, and fashions can infatuate me, but my fancy passes with equal speed.
5 I derive precious little satisfaction from the world. Such pleasures pale before the wonders of the Feywild.
6 I talk to fairies that no one else can see.
