Through your life, your fellow townsfolk have known you as a dependable and capable artisan. You have made yourself a modestly comfortable living crafting items of everyday use for the townsfolk and various passers-by, perhaps even venturing far and wide to sell your wares or ply your trade. One evening you have a dream you believe to be a message from the gods, a divine calling to some greater purpose. Surely you will venture far and wide in pursuit of your destiny, and you must be prepared.
Waking in the morning, you immediately begin crafting the items you believe you will need to set out on your mission from god, noticeably withdrawing from your typical daily creations while you focus solely on your preparation. The townsfolk take notice, and begin whispering about what you may be preparing for. Having burned through your savings and finished your preparations, you pack your belongings and leave to begin your quest.
Choose a god, a pantheon of gods, or some other quasi-divine being, and work with your DM to detail the nature of your vision, and what you believe it to mean. Do you need to save a temple from being ravaged by demons or cultists? Have you been inspired to build a temple and convert the godless? Are you a messenger of doom, or of hope?
- Skill Proficiencies: Not all those that are divinely inspired were previously devout. For some, all of their knowledge beyond the mundane is conveyed by their visions. Others are devout, yet hearty folk, already active within religious circles, whose time as craftsmen traveling to sell their wares has proven them capable travelers.
Choose two from the following:
- Tool Proficiencies: The divinely inspired lead an active life of far flung adventure, and must be self reliant. The tools with which they previously plied their trade are now the tools which allow them to maintain their divine course, keeping their equipment in prime shape as they travel the lands.
Proficiency in one type of artisan's tools chosen from alchemist's tools, carpenter's tools, mason's tools, leatherworker's tools, smith's tools, tinker's tools or woodworker's tools. Alternatively, you may take Vehicles [Land] if you have one of these tool proficiencies from another source.
- Languages: One language of your choice, divined through your visions that will help you on your quest.
- Equipment: A holy symbol (created by you in your preparations), the artisan tools you are proficient with, a set of traveler's clothes, a mode of transportation, and a pouch containing 10 gold pieces.
Word of those who are Divinely Inspired tends to travel (whether it be for your heroic/vile deeds, or the belief by others that you may be insane). The faithful of the powers to which you claim your inspiration are willing to help you on your holy mission. You and your adventuring companions can expect to receive free healing and care at a temple, shrine, coven, or other group dedicated the powers to which you ascribe your visions, though you must provide any material components needed for spells.
Further, those devotees of the same power who appreciate your zeal are more willing to provide knowledge and other small favors that might be of use in your quest, provided there is no material cost, and doing so does not put them in danger.
Suggested Characteristics
The divinely inspired are shaped by their unshakable belief in their interpretation of their visions. The power of their dreams grants them uncanny insight into the world of the divine and/or arcane providing them useful knowledge for their quest. Their flaws might be some hidden hypocrisy or heretical idea, a misunderstanding of what they've seen, or an ideal or bond taken to an extreme.

Posted Aug 28, 2019Stitched together from various backgrounds and sources, including Scarred Lands. A little heavy on the starter gear, as tends to be the case for that setting.
Hopefully useful for characters on quests for arcane knowledge/power as well as religious fanatics.
