You've paddled vast distances, exploring lands that city folk only hear of in songs. Your time on the rivers and lakes (and the gruelling portages between them) has given you a broad back, strong arms, and a keen sense of navigation. Every season, you contract with a powerful trading company, and your hard labour transports immense wealth back to its merchants. No matter that you don't see much of the profit- you're a voyageur, the stuff of legends and folk tales. You know that any tent or tavern will welcome you to lead a raucous chanson à répondre or pass around your pipe.
- Skill Proficiencies: Perception, Survival
- Tool Proficiencies: Vehicles (water)
- Equipment: A backpack, 7 days of pemmican rations , a wooden pipe, a set of traveler's clothes, and a woven sash with a pouch containing 10gp
During your career as a voyageur, you've travelled many lands and traded with many peoples. When you negotiate with someone from an unfamiliar culture, you and your companions are able to recognize which of your goods would be of most value to them. Additionally, you are accustomed to rising well before dawn to begin your day of paddling. You may count two hours travel by boat as part of your night's rest, so long as it is your first activity upon waking and you have access to (and tobacco for) your pipe.
Suggested Characteristics
Voyageurs tend to be confident in their ability to navigate both treacherous rapids and foreign etiquette. Before seeking their fortune with the trading company, a voyageur may have been a poor labourer in a riverside town or a restless youth of one of the nations the company trades with. Though older voyageurs may have families, either in the city or along their trading route, their seasons on the water breed a certain kind of spirited independence.
